Hello all,
For awhile now I've sat on the idea of building a mock-MG-34. I scrapped the project, but I think its worth sharing and maybe inspire others.
The goal of the project was to make a mock German designated machine gun that wasn't super-expensive, with reliable proprietary parts, and the base has been on the market long enough to have replacement parts out there. These ideas came from the A&K MG-42's notorious feeding issues and no aftermarket parts to fix it, and the G&G (and Shoei) MG-42 being well over $1000.
My idea was to take a M240 medium machine gun, and add a barrel jacket made out of "Swiss Cheesed" PVC pipe, change the flash hider, and make a wood stock to mod it into a mock-MG-34 (probably cut off any picatinny rails, and I wasn't sure how to handle the iron sights). The M240 is a good candidate because it's lineage does go back to the MG-34/42 and even has a lot of similarities for being a much more modern weapon. Angled pistol grip, feed tray cover, etc etc. I was thinking specifically the 34 because I felt the barrel jacket would be much easier to replicate with minimal tools.
The drum mag might be a challenge to do, and without a MG-42 drum and an airsoft M240 in front of me, I can't really offer input.
Why I scrapped the project? I don't need a designated German MG anymore. I got the ZB-30 from Migs, and now all of my forces have their own designated MGs. A BAR for the Americans, one ZB-30 for the Brits and one for the Germans. I'm set.
But hey, if anyone takes up this idea, I'd love to see the results!
