Hey all, I'm looking for more ideas for my German M39 egg grenades. I have 3d printed the molds and done a few tests now but I'm still having trouble finding the best materials for a fragmenting grenade. The idea is to have a small charge in the centre of the egg that would fragment the egg (and be safe for the environment). These will be required to light a 10 second fuse (plenty of time to get out of the way) and plenty of time to throw. *Once we figure out the best possible recipe for this type of ordinance, I can apply the same technique to all armies. What I'm looking for is more ideas. - Hard enough to handle, but when triggered dissipates safely, and evenly - Good detail - Cheap material (Baking soda, sand, corn starch ect) What have I tried? - Sand and glue (Never fully cured, too soft) - Backing soda & corn statch (Almost worked might need to adjust recipe, like a bath bomb) - Porcelain dough, cracked and was dough like even after 24 hrs Still to try: - Paper mache - Plaster of Paris (Might be too dangerous?) (maybe mix with sand?) - More tests with sand (Do you have an idea I could try?) Sand & Hairspray? Sand & M39-1M39-2M39-3M39-4

If you have to light a fuse, I can't imagine any place will let you use them for the fear of starting a fire or burning someone.

They are set off using a small type of fire cracker charge. We have used them in toilet paper roll ordinance, but not very period looking. We also have access to our own fields so this is not an issue.

The pea grenades commonly used work well so if you used that approach but with a more authentic looking shape you'd be golden. The appear to me to be a cardboard, paper made like she'll. Dried peas inside create the fragmentation and are of course you degradable. A similar US pineapple grenade would be awesome.
