I'm an asian male, so Republic of China perhaps?

Assorted Mauser variants showed up in armies all over the world and for wide periods and diverse conflicts. Some Chinese units had a variety of German weapons and even produced their own variances. In Vietnam in 1970 we encountered VC armed with Czech produced Kar 98s
I'm sure in Afghanistan some are in use? Certainly Enfields are. The Mauser was produced in enormous quantities and it's reliability and accuracy insured it's popularity over many many decades.

I was specifically referring to the WW2 era. Apologies, firearm history is not my strong suit. I guess I could start patching together a Sino-Japanese War Chinese uniform.

Most of them actually used the Chiang Kai shek rifle, which is similar - but not quite right. They actually make an airsoft PPS one.

Modifying a Kar98 to a Type 24 is not particularly difficult. The only significant differences between the two are a straight bolt, finger grooves, and different markings.

I would like to keep it specifically Kar98k - it has been a favorite rifle of mine since childhood.
I thought about creating a german impression - I read about asians serving in the wehrmacht, but something about putting on a german ww2 uniform was offputting to me.

50,000 Kar98s were also sent to Japan, and more were probably captured by Japanese forces in China, so that is another option for an ‘ethnically correct’ impression (not that being the wrong race should ever stop you from doing a load out.)

You could also do at least I believe a US European Theater kit. I know Japanese American's were in the ETO and I wouldn't be suprised if Chiense American's also found themselves on the European front as well.
Only reason I bring that up is because ETO impressions will be used in more games. I don't even think I have seen a CBI based event in the US and I have seen a handful PTO games with low requirments for gear so just keep that in mind.

The first two documented POWs captured on D-Day were ethnic Koreans conscripted by the Germans after they were captured from the Soviets who initially captured and conscripted them in the Russian Sino stages of the war. World War II was truly a world war and this is one of the more convoluted and complex happenstances that proves that.
The Mauser in it's many configurations is absolutely one of the world's most iconic weapons. It has soldiered on in world conflicts from the slopes of San Juan Hill to modern times.

I would frown upon a Kar98 with an American kit since so many US weapons are now available. It sounds like your best options would be either Chinese or Japanese. PTO Airsoft is finally gaining momentum (in big part due to the Type 38 being released) so you would not be as marooned out of games as you would have been a few years ago. I can give you some pointers for Japanese impressions, and there are other, more knowledgeable people here on this board who can help you with Chinese.

I suppose a plain non-swastika'd german uniform is my best bet

It wasn't unheard of for a GI to pickup and use a Mauser. (As in Band of Brothers with lt Winters in Normandy). He lost his drop bag in the night drop but quickly ditched the Kar98 when a Garand became available. A Plain Heer uniform with Kraut spats would work nicely.

Or a camouflage smock with no insignia over a service shirt and a camou cover on the helmet.
