So I went to my basement looking for my smoke grenades that I misplaced, and after finding them decided to open up my footlocker. Immediately upon opening the locker, I smelled an overpowering musty smell coming from inside the locker. I’m guessing the gear, an entire Marine rig minus the uniform, was somewhat damp when I closed the lid a few months ago. I tried a gentle wash with a little scent killer detergent and it still wreaks mustyness. Any recommendations? Never had this problem before and I really don’t wanna destroy this mix of original and repro gear.

i would say try washing it with a vinegar solution...you have mildew in it and the smell won't lessen until you kill the mildew..and you'll have to clean everything in that FL...

Usually airing the gear out in direct sunlight will work. Leave it on a windowsill for a few days. Another thought is spray it with foot odor spray like the stuff the bowling alley uses. Dr Scholls Odor x is quite good. The flowery scent disappears pretty quickly. It kills the bacteria causing the odor and should do no harm to the canvas.

Exactly what 2ND Bat said, hanging in the sun for a few hours will get rid of that musty smell. That is what I do.
