The guys from Inrange TV demonstrate "walking fire" with an original M1918 BAR. Walking fire was a technique that some genius came up with to use the BAR in the assault. The BAR man was supposed to walk towards the enemy position firing a shot from the hip each time the left foot hit the ground. The idea was to deliver suppressive fire, though I strongly doubt that anyone would really do this under fire, at least not more than once. The original BAR mag belt even had a metal cup on the right hip to hold the butt of the BAR. www.youtube.com/watch?v=vSY_4Jvkl0k

We've spoken of this before but walking fire was still being taught in the US Army in the 60s. In WW2 the Army increasingly moved away from focused "aimed fire" to just putting rounds down range. Thankfully since the early 20th Century and certainly by WW2 and beyond American production and logistics has allowed for ammunition expenditures that seemed inexhaustible.
