I have been watching an impressive documentary on WW1. Apocalypse WW1. It has extensive colorized footage which has also been re-timed to reflect more natural movement. The Narration along with the footage provides an excellent chronocaling of the events. The first world war was far more complex than I ever knew.

The early portable movie cameras were hand cranked, so part of being a moving picture photographer was learning to maintain the correct speed. Really difficult to do consistently.

I never understood why the early motion picture films were choppy but indeed its because they were hand cranked. Because each section of film is different and varies within. Regulating them to a realistic pace is extremely hard to do. The colonization and timing work is phenomenal and really brings these film clips alive.
