Amazing what you can find on Youtube. Here's a bootmaker cutting a 1944 M-43 boot in half to see how well they're made. His conclusion, they were a very high quality boot. Better than a lot of high end modern boots. www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wtxpzw0jvNg

Wow! What a great video. I saw in the insert that initial cost to the government was $7.60 or so and later reduced to 6.29 or so. (The equivalent todays cost would obviously bring that way up). Its interesting that upon cutting them up and exploring the materials and build quality that he felt they would rival $400.00 custom boots. Fascinating insight.

If I remember, the first pair of ripple sole boots I bought at Fort Benning were $9. I think the last pair I bought were $13.
It makes sense that they would go for a high quality boot. The Army was getting mechanized but they still did a lot of movement on foot. I'm sure the senior leadership knew how important footwear was. General Stilwell was kind of famous for walking for recreation.
