Hi, By passing all the impression stuff. My friends and I are working on our personas. In doing so we're trying to learn the German card game SKAT. Played a lot by German soldiers during the war. Does anyone know how to play or can give help in understanding how to play? I googled it and got some good info and a "How to play" sight. But, it's a little aggressive to a non-card player.
Thanks,
-Heath

This is a great question... Cyrus Lee at Soldat FHQ sells wartime Reichsmarks www.soldat.com/soldat_stuff.htmlYou can use these to play to totally top it off! I actually ordered some last week with a few other things, still waiting for 'em though. How about posting up some of the sites you did find?

Another good period card game is "Schafkopf" or Sheepshead, the simpler peasant predecessor of Skat. The old folks in my German-populated hometown used to sit around playing Schafkopf and swearing at each other auf Deutsch for hours and hours. Go to the library and find a copy of "Hoyle's Up-To-Date," which has the rules and some of the variants for Schafkopf and Skat.

Not to be a defeatest but i would totally bag the learning skat idea. at FIG a Luftwaffe Veteran was sitting with us in the stube attempting to teach us how to play skat. this went on for hours! We never got it. another guy in my unit asked him if he used to play anyother card games during the war, He Told us that skat is an old game played by the nobles and the well to do's in Germany and all of the "ignorants" played a game called Schwimmen and it clicked. It took us roughly 5 minutes on how to play Schwimmen and it is as follows: The Dealer Deals everyone 3 cards and an extra hand that is placed face down in the middle. You are to try to get 31 in the same suit. Face cards are worth 10. Aces 11. Play: the first on to go can either Choose to switch his hand for the 3 cards in the middle or Pass. (only the first person to go has this option) after the first person goes you flip the three in the middle and continue play discarding or passing. You may only take one or three, never 2. It is quite simple The game ends when someone gets 31. or if you have 3 aces. Marc

home.comcast.net/~ww2repro/free.html Free Printable reichmarks. Pretty awesome if you are good with a printer and you have some resume/linen paper. For the authenticity minded reenactor/douchebag(said in jest): Keep in mind that a loaf of bread cost no more than 60 Rpf.(Cents) and the Monthly pocket allowance for a Lowly landser on paygrade 16 is 13 Reichsmarks. So please stay away from the 50's and 100's. Also if you are doing an impression where you are outside of Germany Use the reichmarks that say WERHMACHT on them as they are military script and are valid in both Germany and occupied countries. Civillian script is invalid outside of Germanys borders. Marc
