I'd like to start off thanking all the players from GZA for stepping up and making this event a successful and memorable one.
Attendance was 26 players, Allies were 14 (about 7 U.S. and 5 British and 2 Russians). We then had 9 Germans with 2 Volksstrum. Since the Russians were light and we wanted to even things out, we split the Russians up. So the total numbers were Allied 14, Germans 12, making things pretty even.
Keeping up with the theme of the event, The Allies split their forces with the GI's attacking with a frontal assault on Berlin. The British put pressure on the Germans with their own attack on the right flank from the East. Both forces attacked hard and fast pushing the Germans to the rear of Berlin near their flag. The Germans fought gallantly, but were no match for the Allied coordinated attack. Once inside the City, U.S. forces were the first to reach the tower, eliminate any German resistance that was left and captured their flag. With most the Germans either dead or captured, Berlin was now in the possession of the Allied forces with the GI's carrying the day.
However, the Germans did mount a counter attack. After their first way was repelled, the Germans did manage to penetrate the City line and briefly capture the tower and take back their flag. Their attack was comprised of a diversionary tactic on the right flank with a full frontal charge. This enable them to enter the City, inflict Allied casualties and capture their flag. The Allies did manage their own counter attack and retake the City. But the Germans did take to the outskirts of the city with their flag.
After a short break, we reloaded and repeated our first game scenario. Once again the Allies took the City, captured the German flag and took it back to their base in the Woods. One honorable mention is that Lt. Kip should receive the Medal of honor for his fearless charge of the Flag tower. Lt. Kip ran hard and fast towards the base of the tower, climbed it, took the flag and on his way down shot several Germans in the process. Then he encountered a wounded Allie and carried him to safety. With no regard to his personal safety, Lt. Kip should receive his medal.
The final scenario was the Germans launching an attack on the GI base and take back their beloved Flag. The Germans never really had a chance as the GI's and the Brits were dug in and repelled the Germans with each wave.
Game scenarios aside, I thought all the player's impressions looked great (especially the Brits) and it was obvious they put a lot of time and effort into their kits. The other point I'd like to make was the variety of Guns that were there. On the U.S. side we had Thompsons, Garands, M1 Carbines, (both standard and paratrooper versions). With the Brits there were Sten Guns, Bren Guns, Tommy Guns (Gangster style) and I think a Lee Enfield made an appearance. The two Russians had a PPSH and a scoped Mosin Nagant. On the German side there was a MG-42, STG-44, MP-40's, Italian Beretta Model 38, and of course a Luger.
So all in all, it was a successful event that is giving us a lot of promise for more events to happen here in the North East.
