I don't get it.
approx $8/90mi in the "smart" car vs $24/90mi in the suburban. But then you have a $12,000 car + insurance to cover it. It should take your mom approx 750 trips to/from school to cover JUST the base cost of the car, not insurance or gas prices for it.
What's so "smart" about that?

Always a cridic in the crowd...but here comes the hammer boys Concering maybe the thought that we did think the whole payments on the car thing vs fuel cost and adding that up. We happen to own a delivery buissness that runs a fleet of 10 trucks (UPS sized vehicles with an average mpg of 8.6 miles to the gallon) at any givin time, so buying trucks, handling payments and buying fuel in the ammount we do pails in comparason to anything you have ever done and we are well versed in the money required to do so. Well for one thing we already paid off half the car not to mention insurance is crazy low, becuase of the special plan we had it insured under my parents buissness and ecenomical stuff and a few other things that get us price cuts. Now my familiy is very buisy, unlike 90% of americans we put at least 1,000 to 2,000 miles on our Suburban per week and around 600-800 miles on the Mercadees per week. My mother puts up to 600 - 800 miles on our Mercadees per week going to school and doing other things. While my father does everything from driving to wisonsin to Ohio to meet with farmers and other people for our buissness. We bought both the Suburban and Mercades in 94 since then we have put over 400,000 miles on our suburban and over 350,000 on the Mercades. We drive our vehicles into the ground and had both paid off in 3 years at the sam time! Now cosidering the Smart car will now drive up too 600-800 miles per week and will be paid off 1 1/2 years I think we will get out moneys worth out of it very soon and have already started to see its benefits. As you can see we are very SMART about how we manage money and fuel, thus we needed a vehicle that we will continue to use for hundreds of thousands of miles when the fuel has skyrocketed past its current price. "hundreds of thousands of miles when the fuel has skyrocketed past its current price." I doubt we'll see that, but what the hell do I know, right? This isn't an attack or anything, just an opposing view point. -Jack

Actually since I know because of your young age (not saying I'm older or trying to sound superior) you have never done anything to the scale of which I am talking about. And this has alot to do with everything because it shows we are not another typical American family caught up in the economy car craze but deal with this type of buying of vehicles on a frequent basis, thus supporting our experience with this sort of thing.
-So, for the rest of America that doesn't get crazy price cuts on their insurance and pay of half of their car immediately, wheres da smartz?
I guess there is no smartz for them because they dint know how to accomplish this, as you so blatantly implied that my family did not know how to make this car work for our selfs as well, as if we didn't quite think things through. But we have and things are looking great.
But anyway to each his own and we have been fortunet enough to make this vehicle yeld savings to us extreamly quickly.

Cool stuff Adler! Esp. the book! The photos remind me of the training exercises in Gomer Pyle USMC what with the old and new stuff being mixed.

Phew, why the reason for all this heated debate over a glorified golf cart? <YD> That's the beauty of this country. People can spend their money on what ever it is their hearts desire. A smart car is a reasonable purchase, I'd never buy one, but look at what some of us spend on our gear? SO those who live in glass houses, yadda, yadda, yadda. ;D

I thought I'd bought a WWII wire cutter pouch, but on closer inspection that turned out to be a misconception - but then what is it? (pictures are clickable for higher resolution)

Thats a WW2 pattern USMC wire cutter pouch. The WW1 pattern versions were the exact same thing and made by the Army, and I have seen pics of guys in the MTO in WW2 with those on thier belts as well.

Is it a sought-after item? Marine items seem to be even more scarce than Army stuff nowadays.

They are fairly common, most are unissued and are WW2 make. For some reason ebay seems to be commanding some interesting prices for them (kinda high) but they are not rare by any means and should not be getting the prices they do.
Infact USMC stuff has gone up becuase of ebay. Things are now more expensive on ebay than at military shows. I bought a 100% original Depot made P-41 matching pack system for $75 at a military show. However on Ebay the post war ones are fetching stupid money (over $100)

There was also a similar (if not identical pouch) that held the M1 Garand bolt or a spare. Either way they are a great Airsoft pouch because they do a great job and are a perfect size for holding a spare battery.

MOA's next project is to turn this: into something like this: It is driving some members crazy but in war sacrifices need to occur. We need an artillery mover. This is a winter project and the vehicle runs as nice as it looks. The top one that is.

Pretty close. It has a '39 grill but the title says 1938. Actually, I think I paid very little. The shop that has it has an owner who knows cars and he told me he's never seen a cleaner vehicle. I think it will be just as pretty in its new role when finished. ;D

I agree. Once done you can perhps derive occassional income for film lease work. They typically pay a day rate, all shipping and provide full coverage insurance during use. More and more film companies are going for greater authenticity. Just a thought.
