Some of you might not know this, but the Germans were the first to use night sights on their Panther tanks , and a half track equipped with the infra red spotting light that was called UHU (Owl) , and finally another half track called the FALKE(Falcon) , the FALKE carried a Panzergrenadier squad armed with STG44s equipped with the VAMPIR(Vampire) system. The VAMPIR system was a heavy system consisting of the VAMPIR night scope and the power pack wich was carried on the troopers back as a backpack , a power cord went from the powerpack to the VAMPIR scope, there are some reports that the VAMPIR was used in actial combat , but no pics of it in use have been found. This the only pic of the VAMPIR , it could be a German training pic with the tags added on by the US or a captured system being tested by the US.

huh, learn something every day. I'd hate to be the german to carry that thing, its impracticality seems to outweigh (literally) its effectiveness. Reminds me of the "star light, star bright" scopes used later on.
