My friend loaned me his CYMA Luger, and a wave of curiosity struck me: Could the CYMA Luger hold it's own against the Tanfoglio M1911?
Lets start with the history on the two pieces:
P.08 Luger
The Luger was originally designed in 1898 by Georg Luger. It was a single action pistol, that held 8 rounds in the magazine. It was the standard issue side arm for the German Army in both World Wars. It fired a 9mmX19mm round.
Colt M1911
The Colt .45 Automatic was designed by John M. Browning for Colt Firearms. It was adopted into the Army in 1911. Like it's rival, the Luger, it served in both World Wars, and was issued to the American Army. It also found service with Prohibition Era Gangsters, who favored the knockdown power. It fired a Colt .45 ACP (automatic Colt pistol) round, and saw service well into the 1990's.
The Showdown
I started by cocking a BB into the chamber of each gun. The Tanfoglio had a smoother, and faster action. Colt: 1, Luger: 0. I stepped up to fire the Luger at a distance of 20 ft. It jammed. After a few minutes and a few choice words, the Luger was ready to fire again. I fired a full magazine of 15 rounds, of which, 11 hit the target. Now it was time for the Tanfoglio. It fired as slick as a whistle. Out of it's 12 round magazine, 9 rounds found the target. Although it was a close call, the Tanfoglio still came out ahead. Also the groupings of shots were closer together with the Tanfoglio. Now it was time for the ROF (rate of fire) test. The Luger could fire 59 BBs in 1 minute, while the Tanfoglio could lay out 70 BBs a minute. Chalk another up for the 1911.
Conclusion
The Tanfoglio is definitely more battleworthy than the CYMA. However, in order to make Tanfoglio look more accurate, you have to sand down all the marking, give it a paint job, remove the huge tip sticking out, and fill in the trigger. With the CYMA, all it requires is a simple paint job.
Tanfoglio M1911
Pros:
Great firepower
low price
Spare mags available
Nice weight
No gas, no batteries
Made by real firearms manufacturer
Cons:
Shoots a little high
Mags can be troublesome
Needs outer modification to look like M1911
CYMA Luger
Pros:
Only simple modifications needed to look real
Bigger magazine (compared to the Tanfoglio)
Cons:
Low FPS
Cheap plastic construction
Jams frequently
Magazine can only be loaded by hand
No spare mags available
No safety mechanism
Final Conclusion
The Luger is a fine wall hanger (if modified) but in the field that counts for nothing. All hail the chief: The Tanfoglio Witness 1911 with a 5 to 1 win.
