Well me and my football team went to go see Grid Iron Gang one night and I finally saw the preview to Flags Of Our Fathers. Holy crap it was freakin awsome and thats just the previews to it. The only actor I recongnize though is the guy you played Ben Yazee In Windtalkers. I really want to see this movie.

well, we are off to a good start! referance to Windtalkers...
anyways, I have been disappointed before, and I don't know how Clint Eastwood will hold up in making a serious war film(s) like this. The previews look good, but that doesn't mean it will be a fantastic movie.

True you can never know, but as far as I can tell there is nothing inaccurate about the movie. Then again the story line could let us down.

I hope to hell it's better than Windtalkers, and we can always call it Farbs of our Fathers if it's bad! If it's good I know I'll have to start an "anti-Flags of our Fathers as a referance" movement!

Flag of our fathers was an excellent book. Though obviously built around the group involved in the famous flag raising on Iwo Jima and their experiences before and after the flag raising the book primarily dealt with the strange, father/ son relationship the yuppie generation had dealing with the WW2 veteran male generation and how the two views of the world were so different. It was book I could relate to as my father was a ww2 vet, while my war was Vietnam. We both were career soldiers (he retired as a Colonel) but viewed the military very differently. This gap was even greater between my brothers and dad. The book captured these emotions very well. If the movie attempts to capture that critical element of the book the film may not be what you're all looking for and expecting. Especially if you're one who thought WINDTALKERS was good. (I left 30 minutes into it as it was mindless babble and a waste of good battle footage.) The book explained very effectively why WW2 vets (especially combat vets were so reluctant to talk about their experiences.) I've found as they approach the end of their lives they seem more willing to, but you still have to show a lot of interest and a patient and willing ear. this should be a great flick. Clint is a capable director. I very much enjoyed his film Unforgiven

haha yea my bad Nimlas that was a little confusing comment i posted. I was asking what flags of our fathers was about but now 2nd bat cleared that up and he managed to slip a little windtalkers bash in there. i guess i am one of the leniant ww2 movie watchers who dosent care about the clothes and reality of it, if it is a good action flick.

I just saw a HBO first look of this movie, and I must say, it looks very impressive. The film is shot in Iceland (the war scenes at least) which, like Iwo Jima, has a string of volcanic island that closely resembles Iwo Jima. This film, from what I could see, has alot of accurate points to it, such as the Medics (Coremen) having to cover their helmets becuase Japanese sharpshooters would shoot a medic down and know this could take out an extra 12 guys. Another point that is expressed in this film is that there were 2 flag raisings, but the first one was taken down to put up a larger flag that could be seen from the entire island, and this gave the soldiers on the south side of the island hope that were still fighting for the airfield. Also what I found surprising, is that there is a scene included where a bomber with no fuel landed on the island with gunfire coming from all directions, and succesfully landed. There is a somewhat downside to the movie, IMO. Eastwood said that alot of the movie is about their lives after they returned to their homes, and the popularity they recieved. He said it was more of a drama then a war film, and that kinda crushed my spirits, becuase when I think of ww2 dramas, I think of Pearl Harbor and we all know how that turned out. But it is based on a book, so this should be alot better. I hope so atleast. When I go to the theaters I'm gonna wear my M43 Jacket (not really accurate for a marine but who cares) .

I'm just going to wear jeans and a sweater. Coming in period costume kinda seems weird to me. It's like those star wars nerds who go to the star wars movies dressed up as jedi masters.

lol the theater I work at has special features and they are having a bunch of reenactors show up, just to get pictures with some of the people. I'm one of them . That's what I meant. sorry for the mix-up (I have no idea how many times I said that today at work)

Well, I saw it, THe combat was pretty poorly done, But the massive ammount of epic CG scenes made up for it. Clearly Clint eastwood, has never made a war movie before, and has no clue how to use consultants and specialists to make things realistic. Lots of flame-bombs, ridiculous hits on tanks and ships, some really sorry firefights, My favorite was the uber-mega-recoil carbines.
The story and the non-combat scenes were great though. -Gordak

Our local Military Vehicle club placed WW2 vehicles in select theaters with cordoned off displays. I have my Jeep in one of the local theaters while the film is running. All my gear is ETO army but no one seems to care (or know) I haven't seen the movie yet. I'll be curious to see what Gordak is referring to about the battle scenes. Iwo was perhaps the most viscious of battlefields in the war (certainly involving Americans) Extremely intense and extremely close quarters. Most Marines never even saw japanese (alive anyway) as they were for the most part fighting from underground positions. I've heard that the real focus of the movie is the movement to create propaganda and heros out of whatever convenient figure head captures the publics imagination. (Think enemy at the gates) These folks are often exploited and subsequently put in an extremely awkward position. (Pvt jessica from the Iraq war) The irony is the flag raisers were probably as legitimate as anyone could be given that battle and the casualty ratios. The Corpsman (from the flag raising) later ran his own funeral home for years and was probably the most normal of the group and dealt with it the best. His son wrote the book.

I actually did enjoy this film. I thought the battle scenes were good, but not seeing a good war film in a long time, I can't tell the difference anymore. I want to see it again, becuase I had to clean up spilled popcorn or somthing. It was pretty neat we had reenactors and I was tlaking to them about the ww2aa (of course) but they didn't seem too interested . They were all older fella's that were afraid they would break their hips runing around like it was a real battle lol.

The point of the movie was not the battle scenes. It was very good and very touching in the human side of the story.

Finally saw this tonight on dvd. Very let down overall. I didn't care about any of the characters, the combat scenes were short and the movie was just too scattered. It was paced like a made-for-tv mini series. Oh well. "Beach Red" is still the best movie about Marines in the Pacific in my book. In fact, "Flags" made me want to put "Beach Red" in again and see intense island combat done right, so it was good for that. Such an opportunity...wasted.

Finally saw this movie. I liked it better than I thought I would. I loved the scenes from inside the Corsairs cockpits. I thought the combat scenes where pretty good, obviously heavily patterned after SPR.

I saw Flags of our Fathers on Friday night and then Letters From Iwo last night. Both were good though Letters from Iwo was far more satisfying. It followed and depicted the battle very well and though from the Japanese perspective had more compelling characters. Try as I might I didn't see any issues with the combat depicted other then the flame thrower guy way out on his own which just wouldn't happen even in the confusion and chaos of Iwo. The carbine recoil didn't seem extreme either. Must have missed something there. The carbine doesn't give much kick but it gives some. Overall I rated Letters the far better of the two.
Both jumped around quite a bit in the telling but Letters was far easier to follow. The battlefield of Iwo Jima is without a doubt the most preserved battlefield of WW2 with most of the battlements pretty much as they were. I'd love to go there some day.
