This is a little difficult to find, but Amazon.com does sell it on dvd. It's Elem Klimov's 1985 masterpiece COME AND SEE and it is one of the most powerful war films ever made. The film deals with the Partisans fighting the Nazi invasion of Byelorussia, USSR as the SS goes from village to village killing, burning and raping. It's a Russian film and features some truly disturbing images that you would never see in an American production (firing real tracer ammunition over actors, killing a cow etc). It's also very well made and is shot similiar to A Thin Red Line. For reenactors there are a good deal of uniforms on display in this film, including Fallschirmjager, SS, Russian resistance and Wermacht. I read that many of the uniforms, props and equipment were authentic captured German items from WW2. I posted some pictures so you can have an idea of how authentic everything is, but I warn you that this film will stay with you for a long time. Not for kiddies wanting to see "Americans shooting Nazis". This is a much deeper movie and a must see for fans of WW2. Once you see it you will feel foolish for not having known about it 22 years ago...I sure did.

Doom you are quickly becoming the guru of WWII movies, Nice review. I hate to admit I had never even heard of this film. It looks very interesting but sounds so dark I'm almost afraid to watch it. I looked it up on You tube and found several clips. www.youtube.com/watch?v=yyiUMMqieKkSchmitty

Just watched that YouTube clip. It's heavily edited. The scene where they drag the girl by the hair goes on a lot longer and before they start to throw Molotov cocktails at the barn, they lob several "Potato Masher" grenades in through the windows and open up on it with MG's. Very disturbing movie with a slight bias. The Russians were no saints during WW2 as we all know. They literally gang raped and or killed every attractive German woman they came across while advancing into Berlin. War....Not so fun.

wow, i just watched the YouTube clip of the movie and it looks like a true Anti-War piece. i think movies should be told in these fashions, and there is nothing glorious about war. I will be picking up this Film rather soon. Are there any english subtitles or anything of that fashion? Thank you, -matt

The Kino US released dvd has subtitles but no dubbed language track (so if you can read, you'll be ok). And the movie isn't all horror and violence. It's got some light moments as well, but it's definately a "downer" film overall. That village scene in the YouTube clip actually lasts for about 30 minutes when uncut. The movie follows a 14 year old boy as he leaves home, joins the resistance and becomes caught in some pretty bad situations. The viewer only follows the boy and his personal experiences. It's worth the 25 bucks and very few video stores carry it so your options are limited as far as renting goes. Here's the actual trailer www.youtube.com/watch?v=LMKwMzLj8Ow

the title scene is two boys who have gone out to dig up weapons from the battlefields, as you are required to have a rifle if you want to join the partisans.
as i Recall, the first speaking scene, the SS officer yells into the house, that if anyone is a child without parents, he can come out. the kid (who is from s different town) knew what the Germans were doing, and decided to take his chances outside.
the second part the SS officer goes on and on about Aryan supremacy and how Russians are an impure microbe that must die, the man translating is a Russian SS man, who thinks he will be allowed to live if he helps burn the Germans, but they shoot him along with them.

Your memory serves you Gordak. That's right. Although taken out of context in quick YouTube clips, the movie loses a lot of impact. In fact when I first saw it I had not even seen a second of footage. I had no idea where it was headed in the 130 minute running time. The German language is not subtitled in the movie. Only Russian.

I just finished Come and See last night, there were some very tripy 80s parts to get but it was a good movie none the less. I want to know how the girl from the partisan camp showed up at the end? Weren't they all in the woods?
