I've noticed several War Department Training Films are being sold in DVD format on Ebay and elsewhere. I bought several that I thought would be especially interesting. I got German Small Arms Orientation Which is a US Army film to familarize US soldiers on the most common German weapons. Kar 98, MG 34 and MG42 as well as the MP-40. It shows capabilities and mild dissasembly. Very nicely done and a cool period piece.
In addition I got Demolitions which is excellent and informative. Amazed the demonstrator GI's and NCOs aren't wearing Helmets as they prepare and set off the demolitions. Wool mustard uniforms with garrison caps. Good tutorial should you decide to include authentic demolitions processes as part of a mission phase. Props are easy to make although obvious care should be extended to label them as practice or dummy demolitions should they somehow be left behind at a game site.
Finally I got US Infantry Weapons which is classically done with the voice over, corny music and propaganda like approach to Our weapons capability. It features all small arms within the Regiment and has some great footage of use against fortifications, trees, German helmets and several good shots of weapons enagaging a German Mk IV tank (Rifle AT grenade, Bazooka, 37mm and 57mm AT guns. It shows that a .45 pistol round will not penetrate a German helmet at 50 meters but that a 30 caliber carbine round will penetrate both sides of a German helmet at 200 meters. A .30 Cal M1 Garand, BAR or M1919 round will penetrate a 12 inch tree at 100 meters and proceed through a water bucket behind it which redefines what most airsofters consider adequate cover. Yikes!
It also shows a .30 Cal MG knocking down what appears to be a 14 inch tree with continuos fire and the effects on 4 inch thick reinforced concrete from .30 Cal rounds. The quote was "The German thinking he was safe behind that wall has a headache, asprin won't take care of." The films are quite good and were pretty cheap $12.00 delivered
I plan to show one of them at the next local WW2 game as a lead in to the event. The US uniforms for the Infantry weapons has the troops with all their field gear including M1 helmets but in Khaki uniforms. The German uniforms are a hidgepodge and not fully accurate but this was early war (1942) and the Signal Corp film division probably had limited resources. The German tank was a pleasant surprise as was the Opel Blitz they shot up.
