If that's the same sling I got it will have to be, I think the term is "skived", thinned in order to work on the gun. Otherwise it's neat.

I just ordered a tommy foregrip at $19 from them. Backordered. We'll use this as a test case. Stay tuned.

Yep that sling was a mother to get on because of how thick it is.

So it wasn't only me that had to struggle for an hour, to finally realizer it was hopeless I'm going to take a file and widen the hole the sling goes through.

No it wasn't only you...add cussing and sweet whispers of coaxing to it and you have me. I finally got it on but it is backwards, and slightly rigged. Casual observer problly wouldn't notice but every German reenactor/airsofter would see it right off.

If there is any kind of leather worker in your area they have the technology to thin the belt. I have a good friend who is a custom saddle maker. He ran the sling through his tool three times and it fit perfectly. I also had it backwards for awhile but finally spotted the error of my ways.

I put it on backwards because that is the only way for it to fit. I will try and find a leather worker in the area. Thanks for that tip Jim. Though I wonder if it would be cheaper to just buy a new one. Does anyone know of a leather sling that has no fitting problems?

I always thought MP40 slings were brown and not "SS Black"?? Can some one correct me if I'm wrong?

I had thought they came in both colors. Most of my photos are B&W though so I can't say for sure.

You guys are right on this. So the $19.99 plus labor for making it fit. No wonder it wasn't getting much respect. I've never tried, but does 60-grit on a board work on thick leather? Now I wonder, is the sling wrong, or are the airsoft guns?
I hope my foregrip fits. I know, $19.99 plus labor for making it fit.

Could be brown or black hard to tell there.

I'm guessing that the gun is incorrect. Some of my fellow reenactors also got the same sling as me, for their real MP40s, and there they fit no problems.
I think the small picture of the 4 pocket MP pouch, is a Swedish K-pist magazine bag?

Original Mp-40's slings came in both brown and black. The IMA black slings are thicker than originals that I have seen. I have a 4" belt sander and just sanded the sling down a bit thinner but this could also be done by hand as killbucket suggested (would just take longer). Also their is no backwards in sling installation. If you study period photos you'll see about half and half as to which direction the sling goes. I have a couple of the IMA slings but I also bought one from Acme Imports : www.acmeimportsintl.com/reenact2_001.htm That is brown and fits a bit better. Schmitty

Forgot to mention a couple other tricks: Use shoe polish on the backside of the sling (brown or black depending on your sling) to take away that brand new look. Neats foot oil (available at farmers co-op or most horse riding tack type stores) works great to treat and soften stiff new leather. 220 grit sandpaper on the front side of the sling can wear away edges and give your sling a nice used look. Rub through the black/brown outer colour then go over it with the oil or saddle soap.

cool story, I was at the MAX show (worlds biggest militaria show) in 1999, one guy from the chzech republic had over 100 original mp40 slings, 20 bux each, I bought 5 and got them for 16 each!
They are brown, come to think of it, I have never seen a black kar98 sling, and Ive seen alot of slings, DARK brown, but not black, does anyone have any evidence (original examples) of black slings?

I'm sure I've seen some original black MP-40 slings at military shows and museums but when I looked around the web I see most originals are brown. I did find this one ad for a MGC model MP-40 with an original sling that looks to be black or realy dark brown. www.deactivated-guns.co.uk/detail/MP40_MGC_68.htmNever heard of a black K98 sling. they turn really dark light that when the get heavily oiled and age, that sling looks alot like mine, but mine have no cracks, very supple Another thing to remmeber, is it is very easy to convert a kar 98 sling into a mp40 sling, In this picture you see one of the slings I got at that show, due to the lighting it looks really light brown! i10.photobucket.com/albums/a102/ww2aa/Falaise%20Gap%202007/IMG_3906.jpg

Great picture. And good advice.
I would suggest anyone looking to buy a replica MP-40 sling get one from Acme imports (link above) since they are brown and they fit better.

Sorry for bringing this old thread up, but I stumbled across it and though I might as well post my question here.
How long is a MP40-sling supposed to be? The one I got seemed awfully short as I wasn't able to aim the gun at all or move it around too much without taking the sling of my neck...

Why would you fire the gun with the sling on your neck??? -Dakota

Well, that's not really my point... I can't see any practical reason to why a sling should reduce your mobility to a cripple in a life threatening situation. And IF they really are supposed to be this short, I don't get the idea of putting a sliding buckle on it in the first place. I must solve this mystery once and for all. I can't be THAT big. Measure your slings!

A sling needs to be tight and short to do its job well. The weapon should be tight to the body. While slung you're not fighting and don't want the weapon shifting and banging around while you work, need both hands, take a crap in the woods, etc

This is true, Germans didn't fire their weapons with the gun slinged, you see a lot of orginal photos of where they don't even have slings. They would take them off in combat so they wouldn't get stuck on things.

I just got my sling from Acme Imports and it fits great. No need to shave down the strap or anything. Highly recommended.
