Is your muzzle nut plastic or metal? If it's plastic then you might as well consider it a loss as it is only glued on and has no threads...so you pretty much have to use a death-grip with a pair of pliers and twist it off. If it's metal, it should twist right off, although I wouldn't be surprised if some guy overseas got a brilliant idea in his head to add some glue there too. Soak the muzzle nut in some gas or some other glue-hating solution for a few minutes, then try twisting it off again. If it still doesn't work then I seen nothing but brute force with a dash of WD40 is in order...but yes, try to protect the metal. If you can't get it off then I wouldn't worry about it...metal muzzle nuts that actually fit your AGM MP40 are hard to come by as far as replacement parts are concerned.
With the muzzle nut off, your sight/barrel rest will slide right off. The sling can be then adjusted once the larger nut has been unscrewed as well.
I hope that helps a bit.
Mike
**edit -- btw, try a piece of rope or something fibrous to get a decent grip on the muzzle nut. Obviously it will have to be a bit thin so you can separate the fibers of the rope in order to spread them over the area to be properly "gripped" while protecting the metal.

If it's metal, you should be able to get it off really easy by twisting it counter-clockwise.
Btw, having the sling holder on the right side of the gun is NOT more accurate than having it on the left. Seen plenty of WW2 MP40's with both left/right configurations.
