I wanted to thank TommyGunner for introducing me to this site. I am amazed at the craftsmanship and skill on some of the guns and mods, they are truly works of art. I dont know there was some much going on with Airsoft guns and getting them to look like WWII weapons until TommyGunner sent me links to his posts on his B.A.R. build and the final outcome. My first try into an Airsoft mod was an idea I had to mount an AK47 into a Stg44 vacuum formed plastic body. I purchased an inexpensive electric AK47 off Ebay for $19.99 + shipping and vacuum formed the Stg44 in .090 HIP. I know the Airsoft AK47 I used was no were near top of the line but figured it was my 1st attempt at something like this and could always upgrade it later so I made the body of the Stg44 so that it could be taken apart by just removing some mounting screws.
The 1st step was to trim away any of AK47 body that I could to get it to fit inside the Stg44, I cut off the clip from the Stg44 and slid the AK47 clip into it after both sides were glued together. Since I had to removed the selector lever, I put a scrap piece of plastic in its place so it would fire in full auto only. After lining up the AK47 inside to make sure the clip could be inserted properly I found the trigger was not long enough to reach the trigger guard opening so I heated up the plastic trigger and extended it till it was the right length, then I reinforced it with a strip of .060 plastic front and back. I had to also add a strip of .090 plastic to the clip release to make it extend out enough to use.
(Fitting in the AK47)
(Extending the trigger and clip release)
After the AK47 was lined up correctly I cut the butt stock so one side could be slipped out and removed in order to get to the battery, I used a mounting screw at the top and bottom to hold it in place.
(Making 1/2 the butt stock removable)
Next I outlined the AK47 and removed it from the body and filled the one side with liquid insulating foam. I removed the lead weights from the butt stock of the AK47 since it had been removed to fit into the plastic body and placed them into the wet foam at the grip and under the rear sight to add weight to the rifle.
After the foam was dried I trimmed away the excess and shaped it around the trigger and removed a section of it for the battery to rest in the butt stock to keep it from moving around.
(Filling it with liquid foam)
I made a barrel from ½ pvc pipe and mounted it inside the barrel/front sight section of the Stg44 and slid it into the AK47 till it met with the metal barrel then secured it in place with a mounting screw at the bottom of the front grip.
(Making the front grip, barrel and clip)
I painted it with a semi-gloss black paint for plastic and gave it a dry brushing of silver metallic on all the raised areas to give it a worn look. Painted the butt stock and grips in a brown and then gave it a wood grain look with some washable black paint and walnut tone spray paint, then sprayed the whole thing with a matt clear coat to dull it down.
(Before the new barrel and front sight)
(After barrel and sight, forgot the clip cover)
That’s it, one full auto Stg44 for under $80.00 (Airsoft AK47, plastic Stg44 body, foam and paint). Build time 6-8 hours not including waiting for the foam and paint to dry. Weight 6.5 lbs.
Looking forward to another mod using some good Airsoft parts that TommyGunner has let me know about.
