Generally an event is held by professional airsoft/paintball companys, and on paintball/airsoft fields. Sometimes people have large plots of their own private property, and make an event work there.

In my limited experience this is not really the case. The three most recent events I can think of in the Midwest were all held on private land by individuals or units. Planning an event takes a lot of time and maturity. I'd recommend helping somebody out with organizing a quality event first before going it alone.

I live in Michigan and would attend ONLY if it was well organized and I was SURE what I was getting into. I would need things like pics of the field, attendance list........and so on.
I wish I could use my 90 acres of hunting property to host an event.....but my pa' is not willing to let me (yet).

It really depends how well the event is. If you provide shelter, water, and restrooms, you will likely have a fee. The New York Bulge Event is going to be 35.00, but that is because they are providing water, shelter, and restrooms. Also, they are having contests to win prizes, and have Airsoft Corner will be there to purchase items from. The field is also amazing from the pictures I have seen. If you are going to have everyone bring there own items, and not at least a restroom, then I wouldn't even think of charging them. Also, for your first event you shouldn't charge because you want a good turn out, not really a profit.

Thanks I don't think I would charge. I would require that everyone bring all the WWII Guns they have so if someone doesn't have one they can borrow it, same idea with equipment. If I couldn't scrounge up 20 people I wouldn't have it.

the "free love" theory is a great idea to run an event on the cheap, but what happens if somethings broken/lost/stolen? sadly these kind of things happen at even the best events. Mabye a few guys who have hosted events would like to chime in with their best advice?
sgttom, you can go back and modify a post if you feel like adding something just after you posted. 2 individual posts a minute apart aren't very necessary;)

Yea they would have to sign a document saying that I am not responsible for lost items or physical accidents. The borrowing persons would have to pay if an Item came up missing and couldn't be found. It would be suggested that the people coming bring extra stuff but not required.

Doing an event well is both time consuming and tremedously expensive. Usually a good location will require a use fee of some sort. Either a flat rate for the land or so much per participant. Sani cans have to be rented and most land owners require an insurance rider which is rediculously expensive. A good event will have props and pyro tchnics which add a lot. The local fellow here (Battlesim) has tentage, thousands of dollars in props and generators as well as field heaters and spare uniforms and gear for rent. He often pays for military vehicles. (The tank at last years Long Winter used hundreds of dollars in fuel both getting it there and operating it once there.
The initial investment for a great event is substantial and I have even begun to talk about the planning, the scenarios and the coordinating with military vehicle clubs role players, key support personnel and county and state agencies if public land is used.
Events are NOT simply a gathering of enthusiastis unless what you're planning is a simple gathering of enthusiast which in my opinion gets real old real fast. There are very very few groups that actually make money on the events themselves even when the enrollement fee seems like a lot of money and the attendance is quite large. The RECONDO school is one of the more expensive events around and it sells out every year but it doesn't begin to cover the actual expense of putting it on.
Perhaps once we have all the props in place and paid for and are able to run a couple more there will be a return on the investment. (probably not cause we'll probably just buy more stuff.)
