How far the BB will shoot is a direct correlation to how much force you exert behind the BB. Theortically speaking, you can achieve whatever distance you want.
Now I'm going to stop right here, and say if you don't know the differnce between CO2, Green Gas, and R134a, you should NOT be buying the Garand. Gas weapons take alot more time, energy, and knowhow to keep working. Unlike an AEG where you can use it in a game, toss it in a gun case, and then pull it out for the next one, the gas weapons have to be stripped, cleaned, and re-lubed after each game. The gas mechanisems aren't always the the easiest to use, or understand. There is a reason everyone here is recommending an AEG for you. Those of us who have been around for a long time have seen many people, just like you, come up, buy something they weren't ready for, and then get angry and leave the sport because it didn't work like they thought it would.
The Garand is a fablous weapon, however I don't think your ready for it. However since I don't know if you'll listen or not, there are something you'll simply have to find out for yourself. *Also, I've played airsoft in some pretty bad rain storms, and your AEG will work just fine.*

I live in the pacific Northwest. Can you say Seattle? I have played whole weekends in torential rainstorms with no problems whatsoever. Now I wouldn't want to drop a AEG into a lake but they handle rain quite well. Following this weekend I cleaned and oiled the weapons throughly and never saw any signs of problems even after several years. I agree that a new guy in airsoft rpobably should stay away from a gun as complex as the Marushin Garand. The carbine is far less problematic but still more involved then a AEG

In WW2 they hadn't instigated the "Don't ask, don't tell policy." (I have a feeling this thread is going to take a wide swing if it isn't put back on track.)
