Ok. So I've probably disassembled and reassembled my Garand probably 20 times since I've gotten it ;D I know this thing like the back of my hand but for I cannot for the life of me figure this part out.
Is the bolt catch supposed to automatically work or do you have to manually lock the bolt back each time you want to load an enbloc clip into the rifle?

The bolt catch is supposed to leave the bolt in the rear locked position following your last shot and the clip ejection. Just one of a myriad of dissapointments and inconsistencies that makes speedy and consistent reloads impossible with the Marushin Gas Garand. Both of mine worked some of the time and failed other times. Like you I couldn't get a handle on the why's or why nots. The guns made me crazy and kept me in a constant state of frustration. I like simple, predictable and efficient. None of which were characteristic of the GBB M1 garand. It's a pity since the hallmark of the actual gun was reliability and consistency.
I built my AEG Garands for all of those reasons. I love the look and feel of the M1 garand but wanted an airsoft gun that shot everytime I expected it to and could hit what I aimed at and be reloaded in a time efficient, predictable way.

I know my response sounds incredibly self serving but the frustrations of the GBB Marushin was my motivation for the custom Garands. As I've said many times I loved the GBBMarushins but simply couldn't effectively use them for skirmishing and that was the reason I bought the two I bought. Since my experiences were the same with both I knew it wasn't just a lemon gun.
Good luck with your improvisation, adaptations and overcoming! You're a better man than I gunga din!
