Hey thats looking really good there, now could you explain the process and material you used to cover the stock with and get the very realistic wood finish, I just bought a TM VSR-10 and am converting it to a possible Arisaka98 Rifle or a loaner Springfield so I dont have to let people use my good one at events.

Bondo is simply a resin paste that you can buy in most any hardware store or auto parts store. The resin comes in a can and is the texture and composition of mud. You mix it with a small amount of chemical hardner that comes in a tube. Work it together to an even blend (quickly) and then apply it. Once it hardens (depending on the amount of hardner you use) you can file and sand it to virtually any shape you want. If it's applied with any thickness you'll need something to provide strength such as screws or drill set metal to serve as a sort of rebar. If you apply it thinly as was shown in the pictures it can be sanded and once painted and stained looks and feels very much like wood. It's used at body shops to fill in dents. It's fairly cheap at about $5.00 for a quart sized can. I rough sand it with very coarse sand paper in streaks that would replicate wood grain and then after painting or staining I apply a thinned coat of black wash that fills into the tiny grooves for a wood grain look.

2nd Bat, thanks for answering TG's question for me, i have been without a computer for a couple of days, so i havent had a chance to answer any questions, and the likes.
29th, for the mags i am not sure as of yet how i will convert them. For now i am using the m14 mag. Once i figure it out i will let you know. I first need to get a low-cap mag to figure out how everything works, i can probably rig something up.
Click, thanks for the interest. I plan on trying to do this conversion for people in the near future, once i get this process completed, and fully tweaked. The hardest right now for me is trying to buy the metals.
Thanks again for all the interest and support! -Cary

Ok, well i have had some set backs. the thumb catch on my op rod broke off. So i have to get a new one of those. Also the upper rear handguard the peice that goes over the hop up unit... fell off and is now... lost... no clue where it went. I dont even remember losing it ;-( So thats more money that needs to be spent on those pieces. -Cary

Ok, since i have hit a small financial blockade i have decided to rework my receiver a little Here are the modifications i made, The back, i rounded off each side, since the M14 has a more Boxy appearance there then the M1. I also ground off the mount for the scope. Here are some pics. If you look close enough you can see i messed up a little on the scope mount. but its not that bad looking. My grinder went haywire and when it did it messed that up Im going to try to figure out how to fix that tomorow. If i knew hoe to work with lead that would be perfect.. but i dont know how too. i157.photobucket.com/albums/t50/airbornenoncom502/100_0479.jpgi157.photobucket.com/albums/t50/airbornenoncom502/100_0478.jpg-Cary

I finally got a gas cylinder w/ sight, a guy was selling it it didnt check out on the gage to safely fire an M1, so he sold it to me for 15 bucks. I also got a cracked Handguard ( GI issue) for 6.00. The problem there is it is soo much darker than everything else i will have to find another stain or else it will look completely out of place. I still need ferrels, stacking swivel, and the gas lock and screw. Those will all be bought, this comming week since my b-day is weds and i will have an little of an income then I will get pics once i get my stock stained ( redid the bondo work) probably tomorow -Cary

looks great! Your stock finish is especially nice. I recommend you come up with some improved techniques for securing the handguards (The tape looks like a bit of an after thought. There is a Garand ferrule that will hold them both in place as on the real gun and while you do have to further reinforce it it does look good and works well.
I see you haven't mounted an upper sling swivel (I just use the M-14 sling mount and reinstall it.) The other parts you need to fully complete it are the locking lug screw and muzzle lock, stacking swivel and screw and you're there.
The deal you got on the gas reservoir assembly was terrific. You still need to spend about another $50.00 to $60.00 since those little parts are outrageously expensive unless you manage another great series of finds.
Great job! Post pictures when it's completely, completely, done.

I havent found any great deals, but im still trying to look for some. I think i will wait for my next paycheck though to order them, since i just spend 112 on a gas colt haha. -Cary
