I was wondering if M14s were really common in WW2 airsoft, not just for garands, but also as stand ins for G43s or or the Russian M1 copy(the name escapes me at the moment)?

Sometimes. Depends on who is running the game.
Also there is not Russian M1 copy. Theres the SVT40, which is more like the German G43. Its the gun the Germans copied to get there self-loading mag feed rifle.

The SVT 40 is what I was thinking of.

The m14 is a pretty good choice for a stand-in gun for WWII, but with the increasing ability of cheap WWII correct guns (the cyma thompson and agm mp40 come to mind) I don't see much reason over getting one instead of a WWII correct weapon. At the Bulge event this weekend there were only 3 m14 based guns to my knowledge, all were varying degrees of an aeg garand conversion.

Until more skirmishable US weapons become available (Keep your fingers crossed guys) The M-14 is a logical stand in for several weapons in both the US and foreign armies. Wrapped in burlap it should function well as a garand, BAR or G-43. Hopefully the day will soon come when suck approximations are no longer neccessary.
It certainly beats the heck out of M-16s and AKs!

Over here in the UK, most players that dont have a period gun go for either an AK, M14 or bolt action, with burlap added to make it look less like modern guns.
Having said that alot of guys are making pretty decent home made stand ins, not to mention the cheepsoft WW2 stuff, MP40's for $80, Thompsons for $85 and the K98 for $85, hopefully, by the time next year starts to kick off properly their wont be an out of place AEG in sight.

Won't that be awesome? We're rapidly getting there.

The M14 looks like a very basic "WW2-style" long rifle, so it blends in surprisingly good, but a proper M1/G43/SVT40 is always better. Snipers aside, personally I don't like the look of burlap on grunt weapons, it immediately tells that the gun in question is not period-correct, so why hide it! Today, most of the WW2-games held here have some gun restrictions, so the most "modern" weapons are not allowed, for example P90, G36, FAMAS, AUG etc. I think it's a fair rule, because the chinese manufacturers have entered the market with their cheap M14's and VSR-copies, and especially Thompsons and MP40's. Everyone should own one (or both!) of them anyway.

That's good to here, cuz I'm starting a team &riflemen were gonna use M14s. We don't want to spend $500 on a gas gun that shoots 8mm rounds

Thats a good start hoyaboy, try to convert them into garand look-alike's if you can. If you can get just the front end of the gun converted it adds a ton to the looks and can be done relatively cheaply and in a pretty short time.
