Snipers would scout ahead for the infantry units. Most of the time, they would only tag along until they reached the area where they had to set up while the infantry would either continue forward or go in another direction. That would be considered a special detail. Designated Marksmen and Snipers are a bit different from eachother.

There is actually a very good book about Snipers and DMs in Vietnam. I have a copy. It's 13 Cent Killers.

Or, if you are more interested in USMC snipers (an ultra-elite), read "A sniper in the Arizona". Mike, I believe you still need to make good on a bet with someone about that m1928/101st debate. Woof woof <YD>
