I read somewhere that the tanaka k98 mags don't fit in the k98 ammo pouches? Is this true?

Yes that is true. The Tanaka mags are actual airsoft mags and big the pouches are made to fit stripper clips of 8mm ammo so a little small. I think you might be able to take the two pouches together and cut across them and get a mag in sideways between the two but not sure of that.

I modified a set of leather K98 pouches to take the mags. You need to cut a slot in the bottom of the pouch, to let the tab on the end of Tanaka mag stick through and lengthen the whole in the strap, so that it will close over the pouch.

I always found G43 mag pouches very fitting for my tanaka mags. The cloth version is probably best as it can stretch.
