I was on eBAY looking for some good deals and i ran across somthing I've never seen. It was a camo m42paratrooper jacket, the camo like the marines used. I'm not lyin', the ebay store name is dawlong. has any one ever seen or heard anything about an m42 camo jacket? on the dawlong store it said it was used by the marine paratroopers. is this correct or are they 110% wrong.
by the way the reason i don't have any pictures, or weblinks is be cause the auction for it ended before i could post this

There was a picture of just that uniform on the cover of WW2 History Magazine a few months back being worn by a Marine Flame thrower. It was not an actual photo and I wondered the same thing. There was no explanation on the inside cover like there usually is.
I think personally it's a phantom uniform but I could be totally wrong. Any of you Marine experts? I also heard there was a camo jump suit issued to OSS units that jumped in France to supply the resistance but I've never been able to confirm that either.

This pic is from one of my WWII books It's supposed to be an OSS member undergoing training in England sometime in 1944 , prior to Overloard. You can see that he is wearing a camo M42 jump top that has been further camoed with some type of paint , as have the camoed M42 jump trousers and ammo bags.

It appears to be a paint dobbled M42 as opposed to an issued HBT duct hunter camo'd M42. His exposed skin is all well camo'd as well and a suspect he used the grease paint on the ammo pouches but of course that is strictly speculation. It's much more elaborate whatever the medium then the camo'd M42s often worn by the 82nd Pathfinders. Great picture Adler.

I think the M42's made of camo fabric were a very very VERY rarely seen thing. Probably only 1 or 2 were made.
The most common use (as stated by 2nd bat) was done by pathfinders mainly of the 82nd airborne and by some unit's that participated in Operation Dragoon. When I get home next week I'll take some pictures of my m42's which have the "pathfinder" paintjob.
Kinda weird, but doesn't that paint in the picture adler posted remind anyone of EDRL?

Well it's not USMC made, their para-smocks looked a lot different as shown below. The Camo M42 seems to be a fantasy piece.

It remains a mystery. Adlers photo has a pattern that appears either individually created or somehow not quite the Duck Hunter pattern. It would be cool to get to the bottom of it. Definitely a cool looking uniform but obviously so obscure as to be impractical as an impression.

That is the photo that was on the aforementioned WW2 Magazine Cover which I assumed was a contemporary recreation picture. Very unusual on many levels. I didn't think flame thrower equipment was part of the tables of organization for any airborne unit and can't see it as easily deployable via either parachute or glider forces. Not something I'd want to be on a glider or aircraft with!
If it's a WW2 period Signal Corp photo it definitely appears to be from a training shot rather than a combat live action shot. The uniform still reamins a mystery to me.

hey lets dig up a 9 year old thread ..lol..because no one is here....yeah, they made a couple of these M42s for testing purposes at Aberdeen around late 42..they got a couple of pics taken and then the idea was shelved by mid 43 given the feedback on pattern fading coming back from the USMC and the 6th Army units that tried the camo HBTs...but hey..there's a pic of it...let's make a whole unit with them..lol..
