Wow. I think it looks great! Why is the bipod so far back though?

Wow. Wood grain looks great. As far as the drum magazines go, I would contact Burt on these boards because I think I ordered a few for the Ultima he used to own.
Yank - Maybe you already know this, the bipod can easily be moved up and down the length of the barrel shroud.

Can't help with the wiring question but I have the MG42 that Burt the Great sold me and I for one plan on copying your paint job on the handle grip and stock. That makes it look so much better. Yeah, I like it.

Thanks guys! This is actually the second paint job. I did fake bake it before, but it just was too dark and wasnt really any different from the black plastic but this looks way better. I did manage to find a real steel cocking handle assembly, and a cover latch on gunbroker, so that should work pretty good on it except im not quite sure how ill attack the cocking assembly on it.

Why is the bipod so far back though? <YD> The bipod on an Mg42 has two mounting points, 1 at the front and 1 at the back of the barrel shroud. The rear mount makes it easier to fire at depressed or high angles and also allows for faster left to right traverse. When its on the rear mount, it folds forwards instead of backwards. The MG34 also has this feature.

The rear mounting point on the MG42 (and MG34) is mainly used for mounting the gun on a vehicle or tripod.
Although I think you did a great job on the wood treatment the real MG42's stock and grips are far more commonly bakelite. A lot of the parts kits come with wood stocks that are post war.
The Wiring for the drum mag is pretty simple. When you pull the trigger the same current that goes to the motor is also supplied through a small pair of wires to the magazine. The wires branch off near the back of the gearbox, go past the gearbox on the right side (when viewed from above and behind) and attach via a connector near the hop up unit. I think you will need to remove the gearbox to get the wires past the gearbox on the right side.

If you pull the gearbox out to attach wires can you take a few photos of it and post them here, i've spent days hunting the net for photos of the ultima internals and no one has one in New Zealand, it would help greatly with my project, your MG42 is a bute!
