WHAT: Battle of the Bulge WWII Simulation WHERE: Home, WA WHEN: 17-18 JAN 2009 (1945) COST: $50 pre-registered FORUMS: www.battlesim.com/forums/viewforum.php?f=221If you do WWII - this is the event you have been waiting for! If you've never done WWII - this is the event to start!! This will be the 4th Battle of the Bulge event hosted by Battlesim.com and we think it is going to be the best one yet! Registration will open in early November. Set at the closing of the Bulge, Allied units will have their hands full trying to open up lines defended by pockets of German units. By 15 January, Seventh Army’s VI Corps was fighting on three sides in Alsace. With casualties mounting, and running short on replacements, tanks, ammunition, and supplies, Seventh Army was forced to withdraw to defensive positions on the south bank of the Moder River. The temperature during January 1945 was extremely low. Trucks had to be run every half hour or the oil in them would freeze, and weapons would freeze. The offensive went forward regardless!

We are seriously considering sending a squad of our guys. Maybe five of us. Maybe less and maybe more. As you post more information well do so as well. This would be a good time to meet the West Coast players. We figure we'll be bringing mostly rifles for the weather factor and also for ease of shipment and reliability. Could you guys promise nice weather. (Dry and about 50-degrees)

Okay, could you at least promise the ground won't be frozen? The average low for Tacoma is listed as 34*, this true? I saw the whole "dig your own crap hole" deal, and I winced. Around these parts(Minnesota), the average high is 21*, the low 1*. If you want to dig in January, you'd better have a backhoe!

We've had a few winter events that for us were bitter cold (Below 32 degrees) but frankly in Washington that is unusual. Think "Hurt Again" Forest More than Bastogne. Anything can happen of course but Hellmutt has great tentage and folks manage to thrive and survive quite nicely.
The terrain in Western Washington is absolutely Northern Europe and Battlesim events as you can tell from the pictures are top notch. It would be great to see a group of you come out as typically a third or more of the participants at Battlesim events are from out of state. If you want to pre-ship some gear or your weapons I'm sure that can be arranged and frankly makes travelling to an event a whole lot easier.

I as someone that flew across the country to play with these guys can tell you they are VERY welcoming and accommodating and really try and help out of towners out. They put on an excellent game and you won't regret going. I flew with my rifle and wish that I had shipped it out and back honestly. That is the only bad part really.

There is something special about the caliber of player we meet who cross state lines to attend an event. I really enjoy putting faces together with board posts and avatars and with the recent highly successful Mignano Line event and the smattering of other WW2 happenings and Battlesim Vietnam and WW2 events I'm finally able to scratch my historical airsoft scratches in various parts of the country.
It'd be great to see some folks from the East Coast and mid west make the event. Let Battlesim know what they might be able to do to support your groups trech and if they can accomodate you they certainly will.

Its way easier to ship stuff before the event and ship it back. Guns, bbs, uniforms, blankets. So when you do fly you just bring a carry on. Airlines are now charging for checked bags.

Gas prices are dropping in Missouri! $1.93 a gallon!! I never thought I'd say that was cheap Regardless...Airline tickets this far in advance from the Midwest are pretty cheap!! How have people shipped gear in the past?? US Mail? UPS? Or....

I have both shipped and lugged gear and naturally there is something to be said for both. When you lug there is a mindset of assurances that you have what you absolutely need. I've shipped via Fed Ex quite reasonably and had it there waiting for me which was great. It costs roughly $60.00 each way. (About what some airlines charge for overweight bags)
I would definitely line up cots for out of towners as I have in the past. I've got around six of them. I even have a half dozen sleeping bags and would offer them on a first come first served basis.
I went to a battlesim Long Winter game a couple years ago and there was a full tracked full turretted tank there (Actually a British Self Propelled 105 Howitzer. This venue won't support a tank but therre will undoubtedly be some vintage military vehicles there. It was funny the owner of the tank didn't want to leave it on site overnight unguarded. I told him we wouldn't have any problem getting volunteers to sleep in it overnight. He doubted that would be the case as the inside of a tank during the winter is like a cold storage locker. I asked for volunteers and practically hd to beat them off with a stick. (We needed a couple) I strongly doubt either would volunteer again. As predicted the tank was way way colder than the tents and the poor kids nearly froze to death.
That particular year was frosty cold. A Few extra wool blankets is always a good idea and like our heros of 60 years ago it is worthwhile to experience a small taste of what they endured.

..you drive sgttom..?? anyways, My cousin "doc perez" and I drove up to washington from oxnard california and that was at the peak of gas prices being thier highest in history, it was a hell of a lot of gas money but as far is a WWII battlesim event not being "worth it" I wouldn't say that unless you've experienced it, so awsome you'll be crapping in your m42's -Eddie

Long Winter 2009 FAQ/update,
If you have any Q's not covered here please post them in this thread.
1. Can I be german or is that a fixed Opfor role?
This year we have opened registrations for both sides. The format of the event allows both sides the ability to succeed or fail at the Platoon and Company level. Obviously we cant change history and your actions will not change the actions of regiments and divisions but specific platoon level objectives (at the tactical level) will influence the battle at a company (strategic) level.
2.What Units are involved, can I be an SS Fallschirmjaeger or SAS commando?
Although we welcome any impression we reccomend a impression that depicts the average enlisted man from one of these units.
German Units :
HEER: 18th Volksgrenadier 3rd Panzer Grenadier Division
Waffen SS 1st SS Div. 9th SS Div
Luftwaffe KG Van Der Hyte (Any Late war FJ Regiment impression)
US Units: 30th ID 82nd AB 106th ID
3. Why these units, did you just randomly pick them?
All of these units where involved in fighting in or around the town of St. Vith during the closing stages of the Ardennes offensive (late Dec early Jan 1944)
4. Can I ship my guns or equipment to the site if I am traveling?
yes, Pm myself , 2nd Bat, or Hellmutt about any equipment shipping or other travel related concerns.
5. Will there be food, tents, toilet paper?
Period (reproduction) rations will be provided to both sides as part of the cost of the event. Catered chow will be available for a small fee for those with discerning palletes. Battlesim will provide military tentage for every player, we also have some cots and sleeping bags available on a first come first serve basis. There will be TP .
6. I hear it's cold there can I bring my north face sleeping bag?
Yes it is cold here although not Snow and frozen tundra cold. The puget sound tends to keep thing cold and damp instead of rock solid frozen. You may bring whatever modern camping gear you wish however we ask that once you have moved in to your tent your farb items stay in your tent.
7. How do we get points, what color are the flags we have to raise to capture objectives?
There are no points. There are objectives, if you complete your missions you will find yourself attacking and fighting at a distinct advantage. If you fail you may find yourself constantly defending, retreating and short on reinforcements and supplies. Battlesim events are about the experience and simulation of WW2 infantry combat. As a combat veteran I don't aim to make combat a "game" . This being said my goal is to share the experience of infantry combat with you in as positive a way as possible. This means 10k movements become 500m movements, foxholes are pre-dug, and the battle grinds to a natural lull during chow times. This does not however mean you will not do any walking, preparing of fighting positions or that your chow cannot be interrupted by the enemy.

I may be coming out for this one still but probably as 106th or 30th.
I'll be bringing an air-sharp 30cal and I'm not sure if I just bring it or if there are rules about bringing one.
