I was going to totally pass this one but based on everybody's feedback here I'll give it a shot.
Cruise is a douche, but you have to separate the actor from his personal life. Sean Penn is also a complete douche but an amazing actor. I'd probably hate him in real life but his screen presence is just amazing.
Not to mention the fact that I don't like to get into "my religion is better than yours" arguments. This country was founded on the highly revolutionary concept that we would remain civil and not argue about issues of faith with each other (something our nation has lost sight of).

Well most actors aren't the best people around.

Acting wise, I'll explain why I thought Cruise was a bad choice. The problem it's impossible to picture him as anything but Tom Cruise, so the whole movie feels "fake". Also, he should have had somewhat of a German accent. Being able to fake things like accents is what makes a great actor great. Here is my view on religion. Practice whatever you want, as long as you don't try to force it on me. Nothings wrong with a little debate if both sides are OK with it, but never insult. The fact that Cruise has been so vocal is of course affecting his career. The only time I will criticize someone else's beliefs is when it directly affects or threatens me, or violates certain human rights. On another note, it was nice to see a WWII movie come out that had a diverse audience, without selling out to a love story or something. People are finally being exposed to the greatest stories never told. In the end, a real action plot works better than a fake one. I actually had my friends asking me to go see it! ;D

It would seem even more "fake" if they had fake accents.

Yeah, that always ruins a movie. Subtitles would've worked as well (speaking in German) but that would've been way too much and taken away from the movie and decrease the audience. I think they did fine, especially with the chant in the beginning, and how they kind of foreshadowed that into the movie (the Berlin Reserve asked Cruise about his oath).

I saw the movie today and I liked it a lot. I think people don't like Cruise because of his personal life, but setting that aside, he did a perfect job in the movie.
It was interesting to see how they finally made a movie where Germans aren't evil, MP40 toting SS goons. Some people mentioned the fact that nobody used a German accent. I think the movie was smooth enough that it wasn't extremely noticeable.

only good truck they had was a 41 ford v3000 and they blew it up That was my only complaint too. But for personal reasons. I really liked the movie. It was pretty darn good and they dealt with the accent question in the beginning of the movie when Cruise transmogrifies from speaking German to English and remains with English thereafter. I didn't have any problem with that and it seemed to work well. Standing in line prior to the movies showing I struck up a conversation with some college girls. Seemed really nice and educated - till one of them commented, "yeah, the movie [Valkyrie] depicts Hitler's suicide and the debate is that some people think he was assassinated and others think he committed suicide." So I pointed out that they were separate events and separated by time, one occurred in 1944 and the other in 1945 and the other girl jumped in to defend her friend by clarifying, "See what she means, it's a real controversy." She was totally straight faced saying it and so I switched the topic of discussion to the other movie playing, Marley and Me, after which everyone was all smiles.

I saw it last night, and well i'd have to say it was alright. The ending, in my opinion sucked, it was abruptly short and quick.
Hitler could of been a little scarier too!

In my opinion, the Hitler could've been better. He really didn't look a lot like Hitler.

the Hitler looked okay. He wasn't under so much stress as when he appeared in Der Untertang.

I liked it a lot, the only actor I did not like was Bill Nighy, I like him usually but in this I thought he was just a bad choice. Tom Cruise was great and there wasn't a moment where I thought, "Gee this guy's a scientologist", the uniforms looked good and the movie in whole was beautifully filmed.

I'd have to say I enjoyed this movie, coming from the fact that I didn't know that this even happened until I heard about this movie. I also didn't know that the only reason Hitler survived was because the table was Oak and very thick. If the bomb had not been moved behind the leg of the table or the second bomb had been taken as well, Hitler would've definetly been killed.

That's just one reason why he survived the blast , another was the fact that the meeting on the Ost Front heardquarters had to be moved to the temporary building made out of wood and with windows , had the meeting taken place in the hardened concrete bunker no one would have survived the blast , because the concrete bunker would have contained the shock wave of the explosion , but since the temporary building was made the way it was , it literally blew out and the concussion was dispersed , instead of being contained in the room.

Oh yes, I know that. None the less, the bomb would've killed him if it were not moved while in the other building.

Also, he should have had somewhat of a German accent. Being able to fake things like accents is what makes a great actor great. Name an actor that you think pulled of a great accent, and I'll show you a country that says its horrible and not very good.

I have seen a few films and TV shows out of Great Britain lately, and noticed two or three actors who are British, that had parts as members of Easy Company, in Band of Brothers!! They sure fooled me with their American accents!! I thought they were all Americans!! NOTE:This is not the same thing as portraying a German who is supposed to be speaking German. In that case I think an accent would or could be hokey!!

To the comment on B.O.B. actors. It was the guys that played Winters, and Liebgot, that are English. I think there were a couple more I think. And yes I too wouldnt have known that they were if I didn watch the making!

If I remember right, alot of them were - nearly half of them....
