Have to admit, that line was funny. Also, I expected the wounded japanese soldier to blow himself up , but was wondering, did marines in later campaigns even try to help the jap wounded? I wouldnt have after that.

I believe they tried to help wounded japanese throughout the campaign, but there were not that many japanese wounded because they either died fighting or commited suicide. [white]Congratulations you found the first hidden message! Can you find the next one? I'll give you a hint, I feel scratchy wearing these pants.[/white]

Did any of the books describe USMC boot camp? One thing I really like about BoB were the basic training scenes and I was looking forward to it in this series.
I'm watching the episode for the second time right now, the inaccuracies listed so far though don't bother me in the least bit. I really hope Capt. Dye didn't incorporate Vietnam hand signals and lingo though like he did in BoB.

That was really good my favorite part was the part when they were singing Happy birthday to Philips that was really funny
I wouldnt help any Jap wounded after seeing that guy do that and I felt really bad for the Japanese soldier they were just messing with and shooting in the sholders

The grenade thing was a little disappointing to me , for one the explosion was way to large for a Japanese grenade , that and the instant explosion , considering Japanese grenades had a fuse delay of between 4-5 seconds or 7-8 seconds depending on the type of grenade.

By the way the Japanese Hand grenades are Type 10 Grenade , Type 91 Grenade ,Type 97 Grenade and Type 99 Grenade .

I finally saw the first episode last night. Pretty good overall. Aside from some nitpicky details very entertaining and authentic. The nighttime firefight was pretty freaking sweet.

I was slightly disappointed. I didn't think it introduced the characters very well, but we'll see in later episodes. The battle scenes were great tho!

Alright , i am rereading Leckie's book and the whole wounded Japanese soldier scene was made up , also the night battle is completely wrong to how things happen that night. So far it's starting to look like they will be more mad up events on the episodes.

Yeah some of those scenes were made up. Which disappointed me. Although the combat scenes were terrific!

I never read the books here, but I'm sure they will add stuff to make it more "compelling " or whatnot. You can see in the trailers and coming attractions the sex scenes.I bet they're not in the books either...

Are you referring to a lack of faithfulness to the original historical events or in a broader/thematic sense?

Are you referring to a lack of faithfulness to the original historical events or in a broader/thematic sense? I was talking about the fact that in the book, things are quiet in front of his company. A different battalion had passed through the lines, and a counterattack, including tanks, was taking place. Leckie's group was watching this, when a group of Japanese broke from cover to their front, and started running for the safety of the coconut groves. Leckie's group started firing, including Leckie on his MG. He writes "All but one fell...I grabbed a rifle...I remember it had no sling...I found him in the rifle sights...he seemed to be throwing his pack away...I fired and he wasn't there anymore".

Isn't it sad how articulate and insightful that generation was, with their letters home and the books some of them wrote on the war afterwards compared to this current (sadly my) generation of twitter and facebook addicts? Somehow technology has made a big majority of us apathetic to everything but ourselves = /. But on to the actual subject of discussion, i really liked the first episode alot even with the digression from the source material and the inaccuracies that you guys have mentioned. I particularly can't wait until the battle of Okinawa is shown since i don't recall it ever (on a big scale anyway) being featured in a film. Even though the army seems to have taken more of the brunt of the battle in the south of the island the marine part of it will still be great to witness.

The best movie so far about Okinawa has been the Japanese Movie Battle of Okinawa from 1973 , the director Okamoto Kihachi was a WWII Veteran , the movie has no main characters , you see the battle from the point of view of many people , a general , soldier , a female nurse , a civilian barber , a student a farmer and a couple more people. It's a great movie.

My guess is, things like the grenade part, and the "added" stuff were added by the producers to better tell the whole story of the PTO rather then the individual stories of the real people they are following. You have to remember that 99% of people out there have no idea that the Japanese boobytraped wounded guys, and beheaded people, and did all the horible things they did. To us, who know this, the fact that this stuff is there when it didn't happen to certain people is annoying and takes away from the show... to the average person, it adds to the story of the WHOLE WAR.
Right or wrong, I do believe there intentions are good. Most people have no idea how horible that war really was for those guys.

THAT will open a lot of eyes. I look at that and don't shed a tear that we nuked them twice...

On Sundays episode (#2) the 7th Marines will be joining the fight , this is who Basilone was with. It will be on this episode that the 1st Marine Div get's pulled from the fighting and is sent to Australia ,so i am guessing the sex scenes will either be at the end of episode 2 or in episode 3 . So episode 2 will have some battle scenes on it and maybe some at the end of episode 3.
