OD gear was being mixed into the marines stock in ww2. The grunt gear pack is one of the few known examples of an ww2 OD p41 and many of the guys on militaria forum feel those are like the p44 utilities. Issued to a small few, and not widely used in ww2. You would begin to find them in occupied Japan and among Dutch troops in the East Indies. Some things were solely OD, such as the jungle kit and jungle pack. The pack in the above is a musette bag, in OD probably army pattern. While I agree it is an OD bag, the thing to also keep in mind in the above pic is that he has his camo turned brown side out. The OD grenade pouches are hotly debated as very few of the 3 cell pouches show up in USMC pics. The more common khaki 2 cell is what you usually see. I wouldnt worry to much about it unless you are trying to be 110% super accurate in your portrayal of an average marine. I always felt it was better to have a P41 pack to illustrate the differences between Army and USMC equipment than to leave the OD at home as "not accurate enough" and be unable to show the differences.

Hello,
impressive pictures and collection indeed !
I don't know if i post my question in the right section, so forgive me in advance, but could you please tell me if the strap+hook attached at the middle bottom of the M41 upperback pack was attached to the belt in the back of the soldier when the upperback pack was used alone ? or was this hook just used to attach the bottom of the upperback pack to the lowerback pack in the 2 packs configuration, and left free when not in use ?
sorry for my bad english, and thanks a lot in advance for your time and help!

The hook goes into the top grommet on the belt in marching and campaign pack configuration. Most guys didn't do it as it was sort of a pain in the ass if you want to drop your pack quick.
