Okay, I have wanted to do a Vietnam era kit, but I doubt I could complete an American one in less than 18 months. So, hopefully, if I can put together a Viet Cong kit, maybe I can participate in the next event (definitely don't have enough time for the June one). So first off what rifle should I use? I haven't seen many Mosin Nagants or SKSs, and I doubt an ACU BAR-10 will pass. I have looked up Viet Cong snipers and such and - obviously - can't find many photographic resources, or any others for that matter. What sort of footwear should be used? No sandals obviously. Any other tidbits would be nice, thanks.

The VC that participate in the Connecticut events are usually only played by the hosts. I'd just use a AK.

AK's,Mosins's, PPSH's, captured American weapons, but not too many. I'll be there but as US. I can do virtually any period or impression as American. From 1965 on. No desire to be a Asian soldier! ;-)

The VC and PAVN used a Vietnamese copy of the French Jungle boots , this are the French boots Also the USAF dropped large amounts of US Jungle boots into the jungle , that way the VC and PAVN would find them and start wearing them , that way LRRPs , SOGs , SF guys would not have to use Sterile Boots. Black pajamas are perfect , they are the basic clothes of the Vietnamese farmer. Weapons , you have a lot of choices, French weapons : MAT49s MAS36s MP40s K98ks Soviet block weapons AKs from almost every country in the Warsaw Pact PPSHs Mosin/Nagants Also the Soviets supplied the North Vietnamese with captured German weapons K98ks P38s MG34s American weapons you have , M2 carbines , M1 Garands , BARs , .30 cal. machineguns , M1a1 Thompsons ,M16s , M60s

I don't see a lot of VC using M14s in pictures. I'm not an expert but I think you don't see them use them because 1. It was big and heavy (compared to other rifles that they could use instead) 2. Maybe it would have the same problems as an American using a AK-47(friendly fire) 2. Not a lot of supply of them. I wouldn't say it would be immpossible to use it though.

Weapons captured from the VC in the Mekong Delta , top of the photo you'll see an M14 , on the left side a scoped Nagant , 2 stockless Thompsons , a Sten , an M2 carbine with a cut down barrel , an M1 Garand and a trench gun.

I addition to the all familiar black pajamas VC could likewise be seen wearing western style civilian shirts and even blue jeans. In the rural areas however they would typically be in the light cotton black pajamas. Hospital scrubs work well and regular zorri flip flops are fine as would be keds tennis shoes. A black and white scarf or red and white scarf provides a nice accessory as would a camo parachute section that could be worn as a scarf or cape. A flea market second hand store would probably get you all you need pretty cheap. A boonie hat, a black wig, and a few khaki or OD cotton canvas pouches would help finish off the look. Gi boots were very popular as was GI web gear and canteens. The traditional rice hat was worn consistently by Vietnamese farmers and day laborers but VC on operations would typically not wear them. If you've ever played airsoft with one on you'll quickly figure out why.

Thanks 2ndBat, and Adler, the photos are a nice base for the weapons. I was going to get an M14 anyway, until I found at that the Cyma ones are 13 pounds, which obviously deterred me. I guess a JG SVD, to start off of course.

Where did you here that the CYMA M14's were 13 pounds? I think they are more like 8 pounds.

Medic, I'd hold off on the M14, after seeing you try to shoulder my BAR I think it would be a bad choice for someone your size to have a full size service rifle all day. Impossible, no, but I wouldn't do it.
Get an AK, there are a lot of other options for VC weapons but you have a ton of options for an AK that other weapons types cant offer.

Alright thanks! Now, as Marine Boy had said with only the event coordinators being VC, is that true?

I have an AGM Model and it certainly doesn't weigh 13 pounds. I weighed myself with and without the gun and it came out as 7-8 pounds.

Yeah it did sound odd. For the rifle, I am already buying two guns right now and am out of money until, like December. So hopefully by then I'll be able to get an AK74 or an MP40, I'll decide when I have money.

Dont get an AK74. 99.99% of the AK variants used in the Vietnam conflict were either eastern block manufacture AK47's with full wood stocks, or Chinese or North Vietnamese production Type 56's.

For this up coming CT operation there will be openings on both the US forces and OPFOR side for participants. While the US will receive squad rehearsals and operational briefings the VC will likewise be receiving NVA orientation, training and skills unique to their side. Both will learn individual skills, patrolling skills, the art of the ambush and while the US focus may be on avoiding boobytraps the NVA/ VC will learn to set them.

From what I read from the posts on the Vietnam Forum it sounded like it was host only to play the VC, or you had to be highly qualified. Posts from Vietnam Forum on Event: "PM me, LT or Bodhi about OpFor. This is not a typical force on force event. The NVA/VC are tightly controlled in order to maximize the game play." "OPFOR (VC/NVA) for this event will be by invitation only. Registration is open for all US Infantry. Anyone interested in playing OPFOR can contact LT MAC, but acceptance is not guaranteed. Standards for those chosen for OPFOR will be VERY high."

Ebay. Try not to get a Nylon unit 1 (m3) bag. Go for a canvas or rubberized canvas one. They have special medic rules & slots for the event that you should check with first. A good M3 or M5 with supplies will cost you about as much as a decent vietnam Correct M16...

I will be there (all the way from Seattle along with Ranger Warren and 1st Sgt Swift) If you're still interested I'm confident they could find a slot for you as a VC/ NVA medic or foot soldier. I undertsand there are 60 folks pre -registered so it should be a pretty good sized event. Registration as I understand it ends tonight (6/21) So if you plan to go get signed up. They have gear and uniform items available for the OPFOR and limited availability of gear for US soldiers.
