I dont know where the idea of guns not being used in the trenches comes from. Raiding parties frequently used revolvers and there are even examples of cut down and sawn off smles being made.... My regimental museum has a replica WWI trench network... see here: x.staffordshireregimentmuseum.com/trench.php

Trench warfare also involved MPs , Pistols , Flamethrowers and even cut down Rifles and shotguns , the Germans even tried to get the Geneva Convention to outlaw the use of shotguns by American troops , and this coming from the Military that first deployed Gas and Flamethrowers .

I qualified on a WW1 era trench shotgun when I was in the Army. I wish I had that shotgun now! Had WW1 dates, bayonet lug and all! BTW,Tanaka makes the gun! Unfortunately, it's mostly plastic!

making trenches are alot of work It sure is , but worst of all is Digging fighting positions in the Alps while the Austrian troops are lobbing hand grenades down at you. Trench warfare was horrible but for the Italian and Austro-Hungarian troops fighting against each other in the Alps it was much worse.

oh no argument there!
I wrote a history paper about the 9 Isonzo fronts. I read alot of articles about the difficulties of living/fighting in that terrain. Instead of dirt and mud, the soldiers had to dig into Ice and rock. And they did it somehow! Often tragically resulting in people being buried alive in their mountainside caves.
