I thought of this idea and was wondering how to put it into play.
How about an airsoft sceneario where their are about four wooden gliders being towed by the C47 trucks like the ones at Jump of Destiny. But their would also be trucks not hauling paratroopers just towing the gliders around. Before the para's drop the Glider rope is cut from the truck and the glider parks around their drop zone. Then the pilot opens up a card. It could read one of the four, each person would have a card with a number on it in the glider.
1. Everyone okay 2. Numbers 5 and 7 are out 3. 1,8,2,7,6 are out 4. Everyone is out (out meaning dead)
Good idea? I think some prop makers could make some Waco gliders. I have seen blueprints for a Waco to build. This would add more effect to the D-Day. You could also be dropped in "Rommels Asparagus". Each glider would have a different card, like the ones above. Gliders could land anywhere really, each time would have a certain drop zone.

Wagons free wheeling across that valley filled with "glider troops".. There'd be a lot of crap to clean up out of those wagons afterwards I assure you...Still the thought does make me giggle.

I love the idea, however building a rolling wooden glider would be a huge undertaking. Not to mention building 4 of them, even if they were at 1/2 or 1/3rd the size fo a reall one it would still be quite an effort.
Neat idea though.

I have some stick time in real gliders/sailplanes and plan on getting my glider rating in the next couple of years. I have also spent many years flying giant scale R/C gliders. We tow them to 1500-2000 feet with a power model then release and soar around. I have 1/3 scale models, one is a 22 foot span and have flown a couple of 1/2 scale models. Neither would be anywhere big enough to get anybody into it. You would have to build a near full scale replica and maybe make stubby wings for it or no wings at all. I always wanted to do this, using some kind of "zip" line arrangement!! But that would be quite and undertaking

Interesting thoughts. The poor glider riders have always been overshadowed, unfairly, by the paratroopers. I don't believe they were given hazard pay like the paratroopers, even though landing by glider was as dangerous, if not more so, than parachuting.

Maybe reviving the idea. Instead of building a full scale or small 1, why not use a carry-on trailer? I'm pretty sure that people around farming communities know atleast what they look like, if not look at www.tractorsupply.com/trailers-towing/trailers/utility-trailers/ maybe some 2x4's or small pieces of plywood on each side to replicate "wings" would do the job. Hopefully 1 of our many members own 1, or atleast can barrow 1.

addition: it can be towed by ATV's and small pick-up trucks as the "main towing plane".
