I had an expert tell they NEVER used them. Ever seen a flag on a 101st trooper in a picture?
Nice impression, definately get a hair cut.

Very nice! One suggestion, is to fill up the pockets with crumbled up newspaper or somthing to make it look bulky. It looks alot mroe authentic. Other than that great impression! Did you paintshop the ground in that second pic?

Looks good! I used to have long hair, its not hard to hide, just work at it, Pony tail then flip it back up into the helmet is best. Keep it up! -Gordak

Ok folks. I figure it's about time to show ONE of my US impressions. Here's my 2/502 Operation Neptune impression. Just hit the ground and am ready to fight! I hope you like it! And here's the list of equipment for those interested. ATF import reinforced M42s w/original jump wings WPG Jump Boots Ft Benning Paratroopers white t-shirt SOS gas brassard Original wrist compass jump gloves Jump helmet with net and scrim complete with airborne liner and chincup The following is a mix of original, and repro from ATF, WPG and Bayonet Inc.: Pistol belt M36 Suspenders shoulder pads .45 magazine pouch .45 1911 holster Assault gas mask bag w/gas mask Thompson magazine bag rigger pouch for grenades wirecutters with pouch canteen, cup and pouch first aid pouch with carlisle bandage mussete bag with let down rope And inside my pockets I have an m2 switchblade, cricket and whistle My weapon is a TM M1A1 Thompson with a WA SCW2 1911 in the holster. You might be asking yourself why this is in the "I'm working on it!" thread and the reason being... I don't feel it's 100% complete yet. I've still got a whole lot of personal items to get to fill out my impression. I'm also needing a jump knife and hawkins mine for my legs.

The jump boots dont have toe caps. 0.o A few suggestions; Take off the jump wings, fill out the pockets a bit, tuck in the a yolks on your helmet.
Looking quite good!

The boots have toe caps you just can't see them for some reason in the pic... must be the lighting. As for the pockets... that has to do with me finishing up my impression... I won't have socks (well all socks) in my pockets... they'll be filled with real items ;-)

These last grouping of impressions are quite good. I am impressed with the amount of detail and accessories. Gas cloth on the shoulders, wrist compasses, proper looking gloves and rubberized assault gas masks, bandoleers (Khaki even!). riggers pouches. Yellow rimmed grenades. Very cool indeed.
Though the flag was rare amongst 101st AB troopers it was indeed in place with some units. (definitely not the 506th) I spoke with a 101st D-Day vet who related a story that I found surprising. He said the band of airborne troops he was with was facilitating a link up with advancing armored units from Utah Beach along a causeway. They took friendly fire and he said one of his corporals jumped up into the road and aggressively was pointing at his American flag on his arm. The firing stopped and fortunately no one was hit although the corporal was very lucky. I mentioned that I didn't think the 101st wore the flags. He said that his outfit pinned them on and that he was glad they did given the nature of their assignment. He said the battalion commander told them (maybe the day before the jump) that the 82nd AB had sewn them on and that if veterans of previous jumps thought it was good idea it was good enough for him. This story was related to me at the battle of Bulge Survivors reunion at Ft Lewis in 2002. D-Day was the 101st's first combat jump. The 82nd had done many previously.
The 82nd pretty much all wore the flags and had them sewn on in most cases having learned from combat experience during their previous jumps. So apparently a pinned on American Flag would be okay for a 101st impression. (I wish I knew which unit he was with.) I went back through my notes and didn't have it written down.
One touch that would be nice for the above impressions would be a white or camo silk scarf made from parachute fabric. They sell from time to time on Ebay and are a nice touch as well as being a nice comfort item. Faces blackened with burnt cork is also a great detail and helps disquise facial hair.

Funny you should mention those two items... I've got a pic of me at a game with both the scarf and burnt cork on my face. Once I get my laptop fixed up I'll have to post those impression pictures That's a very interesting story about the flag as well. I had always thought the 101 didn't wear the flag until Market Garden but it makes perfect sense. I guess I'll have to get out my sew on muslin flag from my Market Garden Impression and carry that in my pocket with the rest of my stuff

Napalm, x2 what Mauser said. And your may want to roll your gloves up a bit, as that's what I see in most photo's. Looks good!
Fencan'tspellyourname-I'd get your helmet from Lawdog helmets, I love his helmets. Looks good dude! Love to see another 82nd trooper!

Fennrisulfr(spelled it right, happy now? ;D ) Yes they make good helmets, but I feel that the cork texturing is just better on the Lawdog helmets, and how can you go wrong when he's got a cool name like Lawdog?

Yea, Gary's service is unbeatable, he even took a phone conversation giving me the all info about ww2 liners i would need. And yes, his corking method is very good, far better than Jmurray. He stated that they tried to steal his method before. 0.o To put it simple, if you want a quality helmet that is individually treated and made to your specs, go with lawdog. If you want a "cookiecutter" helmet, go to Jmurray.

Those are great. love the magazine effects. The scarf, grenades Garand clips and map are an especially nice touch. The light wood on your Garand is perhaps not authentic (Military) but sure looks nice! The wool Mackinaw is very cool looking. Great with the snow background.
You are all set for the "Long Winter" game upcoming in the NWest in January I think.

Dutch, on your airborne impression, i dont think they carried haversacks, they only carried mussette bags, infantry carried haversacks and when they could get 'em, they would take the mussette bag

my mistake- it's the musset bag that I have. The haversack word slipped out of my ACW reenactor mouth... I would highly recommend the book "GI Collector's Guide' by Herni-Paul Enjames isbn:2-913903-87-8. 272 pages of full color photos of gear, weapons, clothing and other stuff from the US Army European Theater of Operations. www.amazon.com
