hi guys well I had a bit of spare time at work the other night (like im busy most nights ) and had forgot to take my g43 bits in so I thought I would have a go at starting the fg42. for some insane reason I am always carring a gearbox about with me so I thought I would start the receiver. the only way I felt that I could get the gearbox in there the way I wanted it was to make a split receiver so here is the first half roughed out. jay.

cheers guys. the receiver is made from billet ally, a lot easier than trying to convert something to fit. the mag is a shoei mag which are a bit pricey but nothing compared to an original . have been doing some more work on it so will get pics up later. cheers jay

Schmitty > BigEd
Biggest hurdles with any build are Air Seal and Feed.
1. Mag into the receiver and hold it in place securely (mag catch). A mag with alot of "play" in the magwell is a bad thing. Feed issues AND air seal (fps loss) can occur.
2. Mag to feed into the hopup without damaging the hopup. It should just allow the bb catch to open when the mag is fully seated. The mag should also not displace the hopup 1mm or more otherwise air seal is compromised.
3. Gearbox up tight against the hopup. If it is not, air seal is again compromised.
4. Inner barrel should reach the end of outer barrel or you will lose fps and accuracy.

whoa......a twelve thousand dollar machine?!?! that's just crazy..... ;D i mean something more along the lines of converting an aeg to a wwii gun or something like the M14 to M1 Garand conversion, not something huge and uber expensive. but perhaps when i'm a tad older, say 50.

Amazing, Where did you get the other FG-42 bits? (rear sight, wood fore grip) Do you have a shoei replica you are working off of? Looks like the motor will be inside the pistol grip? Will that cause the hop up to be much farther ahead than the magazine? If so how will it feed?
Thanks for keeping us updated, Your efforts are inspiring.

cheers guys. yes schmitty i have a type 2 shoei so that does help a bit. the motor is at the rear of the reciever as its an agm m14 gearbox and the nozzle is at the front of the magwell.i have sorted the mag out which has g&p sr25 170 rnd internals inside and means the feed hole is at the very front of the mag. as i am making the hop unit aswell it should not be a problem getting it all to line up.

Are you setting this up to be replicable or a one off? Amazing work. Oh to have a CnC machine!

im afraid it will be a one off, i can see why the germans changed the type 2 to a stamped receiver from a machined one, it is just too time consuming. all the work has been done on a manual mill, not cnc, and i think the small garage mills can be picked up for around $600 so it is do-able.

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but it looks like you are building a type I (slanted pistol grip E-type). Are you using parts from a type II (wood pistol grip G-type)?
I'm having a hard time understanding how the gearbox will fit. I have a shoei type I (e-type) replica and a airsoft club M-14 AEG gearbox and it doesn't come close to fitting within the dimensions of the receiver. This is a riddle I have not yet solved so I am super interested in your solution. Are you having to modify the original dimensions? Seeing your incredible progress has got my gears turning again.

Schmitty yes i am building a type e, and i am using some parts from my type g like the rear sight. i am going to have a go at making the front foregrip so hopefully wont have to use my type g one. i will also try to make the type e stock from wood instead of metal then spray it black. i guess it would have been easier to build a type g but i have owned two shoei type e's before and i just like the look of them better. the receiver is a tough one, if you kept all the dimensions to exact scale there is no way of getting a gearbox in there, so the receiver has been made slightly wider and slightly deeper, but hopefully not too much to affect the overall look of the gun. if you can picture the nozzle on the agm m14 gearbox at the very front of the magwell, that puts the motor at the lower rear of the receiver. this part of the receiver will be machined away so that the motor will be visible, but will be hidden inside the stock. jay
