Very nice, very cool, very not-so-practical on the field. Invaluable if you're defending a base or position, but overkill on offense.
One of my first airsoft deaths was from one of these.

Pete it's 1/7 air cav..either way it dosent really matter. For me its either Air Cav or Airborne...I know the 173rd saw quite a bit of action in the nam...same with tropic thunder and the screamin eagles. 173rd airborne in nam 101st in nam

The 173rd is an excellent outfit to represent for Vietnam as they were involved throughout the war and as a unit probably spent more time in the field engaged in small unit action than any other unit.
The Thumper was a pivitol weapon with regard to land combat as it gave the squad sized unti in essence it's own indirect fire weapons. A ggo thumper gunner could get three rounds in the air before the first one hit and adjusted on the fly quite effectively. The dominence of the MG changed practically overnight as in the typical ranges of engagement in Vietnam the MG was far more vulnerable tah ever before.
Terrain wise normal dead space that couldn't be covered with direct fire could be effectively covered by the M79. The flecette round was also highly effective in thick jungle as a sort of shotgun shell on steroids.
They were an amazing weapon. It's rare that you find a decicated and skilled airsoft M79 gunner with adequate numbers of the expensive shells and the talent and skill to make it work in an airsoft event but when you do they are devastating. The NVA loved the weapon and captured and used them often as they could. They also created their own version.

Yes, Nam gear is significantly easier to find, and most is very affordable.
Kken will hook you up. If he doesn't, I will.
