I'm having some trouble researching if only officers in field grey uniforms wore visor caps? What Waffen SS ranks carried a side arm? What Waffen SS units wore field gray uniforms? I'm still researching and putting my impression together and I wanna make sure I do it right.

ALL Waffen SS combat units wore feldgrau. Officers and enlisted. Officers and machinegunners carried sidearms,sometimes NCO's.
Like I said earlier,buy some books,do your research! Google is your friend! Failing that, ask around here.
Officers wore visor caps,sometimes NCO's,but not in combat,or VERY RARELY in combat.

Thanks, I've been using Google, but I've only found basic knowledge of the Waffen SS.

Look at Photos.....google is your friend.
As far as caps, Uscha and above is a good rule of thumb.You would be looking at a EM M37 "Crusher". I have seen TONS of photos of Uschas wearing m40 style caps. You can find a lot of pics of officers wearing m40 and m43 pattern hats instead of peaked hats. It is totaly up to you. Make sure you look at ENLISTED pattern hats if your going for a NCO impression....
Pistols...MG gunners carried them and some times you would see squad leaders and senior NCOs with them. Most common is a pistol worn with a mp40 pouch on the other side.
There is a lot of cool stuff you can do with pistols if you are a NCO....Polish p35p, P38,Browning high powers, and tt33 tokerv. When I did Blank fire, I carried a P35p for western front events, and I carried a TT33 for Ost front(and a PPsh;))

As said before, all soldiers and officers of the Waffen SS wore the basic Feldgrau. Insignia is pretty simple. Just choose the preffered rank , and that will be your collar tabs, then you need your sleeve eagle. Also, optional is a Cuff Tile. Waffen SS are also known for their distinct camoflauge.
