Those of you that have them and use them at events... how do they shoot. Range good? Better then AEGs? Consistancy, grouping, ect? Has it ben reliable for you? Any problems with them?
Basicly I'm looking at a new project. My girlfriend has wanted a springfield for a long time. However, she ins't strong enough to cycle an upgraded spring gun like a VSR. I was playing with a K98 tonight and thought... hum, it wouldn't be hard at all to drop this into a 1903 stock and make a really cool gun for her, but I don't know much about the gas K98s and thought I'd see what people who have them think about them.

They make gas bolts for VSR's. The Tanaka's shoot very very well in warm to mildly cool weather. Others from the north would have to give you a review for cold weather.

I did not know they made gas bolts for VSRs... interesting. Does it take an external air source?
It's not like it gets extra cold around here. Not like it does up North, maybe into the 20's sometime, but it's not like I'm going to be outside in that... ha ha.

Rather than use a K98 a cheaper option would be a M700, one of the guys in our group has built a SMLE using a KJW M700 and says that it was a fairly easy job, it certainly looks like a lot less fuss than doing springer conversions.

I've heard the KJW M700's are on the junky side out of the box. Inconsistent and not the best accuracy. In other words they need upgrading.

A Bell M700 would be more bang for your buck than a KJW M700. It already has a PCS (adjustable fps) installed and is reportedly more accurate than the KJW. It's also almost half the price.

Hum, I know next to nothing about gas rifles as they were not allowed by Sacairsoft (who I play with mostly) for a long time. We recently reviewed the rules and lifted the ban and I started thinking about it. I am looking for quality, not price so I'm interested in the tanaka for that reason, the seem to have a good rep, but I wanted to hear first hand from owners.

someone one these forums told me that the Kar98k has some issues with its longevity and the fact that the metal parts may start to warp after extended use (i.e. the barrel bends downwards making the iron sights completely unusable). He told me that it was because the metal was aluminum. He's not the only person to tell me that, but other people tell me that it is zinc. Others further tell me it is steel. I'm not sure. Maybe different production runs use different metals?
In either case, if it is made of aluminum then you should plan on buying a scope.

Using a Tanaka anything is an expensive option for a conversion. The Tanaka kar98k is an excellent rifle. They are not cheap in price of cheaply made

I will second Kalbs remark. The Tanaka Kar 98 is an excellent airsoft skirmish rifle and in my opinion a great value. They function adequately in the north except in extremely cold conditions and are reliable, accurate and well made. I have fired them numerous times and have always been very impressed. If they made a Springfield that was identical quality and the same price I would gobble it up in a heartbeat. The only gas gun I have ever found skirmishable except perhaps the original 6mm Marushin Carbine which was also quite good.

Remember that the Tankaka K98 (at least to my knowledge) has all of the swastikas and proof marks of the real thing. So, you would have a German-marked Springfield. Oh well, just call it "re-captured", lol.

Using a Tanaka anything is an expensive option for a conversion. The Tanaka kar98k is an excellent rifle. They are not cheap in price of cheaply made the Tanaka Kar98 is made from zinc diecast and steel (and wood too) the metal will never warp, i dont know why someone would tell you that.. but up here its cold, so absolutley no chance of warpage for us (which it wouldnt warp anyway)
