Hey! Did I see Marines with camo helmets covers at 2:39 minutes? That would be be a find if true. I know they were on ships but I read no camo covers were ever worn in the ETO

There looked like there was some stuff "spliced" in here and there. I noticed there were splashes around the DDs ( like they were under fire from another ship or shore battery) which was odd to me for Dday as I've never heard of the ships in the channel coming under fire.

well, there are japanse dive bombers in a dog fight scene too, so yeah it got chopped up and dramatized by a clueless person somewhere, probably still in the 40's before the film was deemed to graphic to publish.
It has actual beach footage, yes lots of boddies in the water, pretty much erasing all the hollywood glammour, cleary it was a terrible day where brave men resigned themselves to a grinder for the greater good of all time. at first I thought perhaps it was footage from a training landing, but Im totaly convinced its one of the waves on the first day. -Gordak

I allso noticed a lot of bodies floating in the water . Yeah, there were a lot of guys floating. It's hard to even imagine that kind of slaughter today. What a truely horrorable day that must have been for both sides. hairy apple, I believe there was counter fire at Dday, the texas (which is in the film) took a hit two weeks later in the campain, luckly the shell didnt explode. -Gordak Interesting, I did not know that the invasion fleet was fired on during D day.

Apparantly the first ship to go down, the Uss cory, gleaves class destroyer was the LEAD destroyer in the invasion fleet, probably the most exposed. She was caught on film dueling with a shore battery, Struck, then sunk, all on film. Here = www.youtube.com/watch?v=RC8eEMOrdu0Apparantly she was being esorted by a smoke screen aircraft, which was shot down causing the destroyer to suddenly be exposed well within range. 3 german 210 mm guns destroyed her at a range of 2.5 miles. The crew mostly survived the initial sinking but took heavy losses in the cold water as shells continued to land. the largest ship, Sumner class destroyer, USS meredith, was actually sunk by german bombers on the 9th of June. here is a lengthy list of invasion fleet losses www.patriotfiles.com/forum/showthread.php?t=112725

The invasion fleet took heavy losses over the month of June from a combination of Shore Batteries , E-Boats , U-boats and the Luftwaffe. Many books , movies and documentaries make it look like the Germans offered little resistance to the fleet but that's not the case.

I had a boss who was an LST crewman at D-Day,and said they took tremendous fire from shore batteries. He said 88's were targetting them, and the shermans they had onboard were doing their best to fire back.

I read the diary of the captain of LST 287, and he admited later that there were a few times on D-day when he was almost certain they were dead. 287 is listed as undamaged, so it must have been close for everyone. If you look at the list, alot of LSTs went down, they aint small ships by the way.

Wow very cool footage.
There are several pictures and some color film footage of GIs in the ETO using a section of camo parachute material as a helmet cover which at a glance looks like a Marine corp helmet cover. This was relatively uncommon of course but for it to show up in pictures and film proves it was indeed done. One thing to remember however about pictures is that photographers are attracted to the unusual and often times misrepresent the uncommon at a higher percentage.
Editors also are attracted to the unusual, which further contributes to this phenomena.
