Ive always wanted a US rifle cuz almost everyone owns the CYMA thompson m1a1. What is the best and cheapest US rifle to convert like the springfiled conversion or m1 garand conversion. I would love an m1 carbine but i havent heard much about creating one.

You can buy a carbine for around 300-400.00 used they don't make them anymore. decent gun get the non blowback model. Other than that I would maybe look at doing an M1 Garand as it was the common battle rifle.

I'm obviously a fan of the Garand conversion and highly recommend it as a do it yourself project. A bare basic conversion using a Clone Chinese M14 and actual Garand parts can be done in materials alone for well under $300.00 (Under $250 if you get real lucky on parts)
They are skirmishable, accurate and reliable and really help break up the unrealistic over prevalence of Thompsons on the US side. Hundreds upon hundreds of them have been made from folks who visit this site. Home projects and commercial efforts. You also see them used here from time to time at very affordable prices.

What do you mean by best? It depends what your looking for and how much you are willing to work on it. An M1 Conversion can average from crumby looking to very close to the real thing depending on how much you want to put into it. Custom guns are certainly a bit fustrating and time consuming. If its your first custom and you aren't experienced with craftmanship and tools it will take a while to get it right. When I did my first custom rifle it took a very long time to get it right and how I wanted. I learned a lot from it and improve every time I make a rifle. I'd suggest you try it. For an average airsofter I'd choose the Garand over the Springfield, its more common and has a higher rate of fire. It can also stand up against AEG's without all to much trouble. Bolt actions are definitely harder to use, that's wear the US have an advantage over the Germans. I love Kar98s though

i am accually sick of everyone creating their own guns. it may be fun yes it is but why dont they just make a 120 dollar m1 garand for petes sake.

Get in line! That seems to be the sentiment of at least 80% of thes folks on this forum.
The simple fact is the start up tooling is extremely expensive (In the 10s of thousands of dollars) and the folks in a position to gear up to do so fear that a long, heavy, low mag capacity, semi-automatic rifle would not have universal enough support to recoup their start up cost. I disagree with that opinion and think the rifle would do very well but since you asked that is the reason.

And they're probably right. What would you bet that at least 98% of the Airsoft market wants the sexiest modern bb sprayer with all the doodads hanging on it? I'm amazed at the duplication in AK's and M16's/M4's, but they keep selling. It's a shame, but it's the way it is. WWII is ancient history to most people now. Which is also a shame.

I don't agree. WWII is still quite popular in media and video games. Not as much as modern current warfare but still I think WWII weapons would sell. Its not just for airsofters though, they would be great display weapons and good for WWII collectors too. I know a lot of reenactors who would think a cheap airsoft M1 Garand would be a great display item. I've seen a lot of reenactors use dummy weapons and even homemade ones so why not airsoft.

tom is right but the video games are changing the tide because medal of honor is now modern. it would be nice if they made ww2 games that wernt battlefield, medal of honor or call of duty. and your also right about the display. if i got the marusion garand i would put it up because its so realistic. the only problem is its too much douh so they should make a cheaper one like an electric one. oviously they know how to load in from the top and just swithing it to electric should not be a problem.

I don't think there's anyway to make an AEG load from the top. Gas rifles are a lot different then AEG's. Even if there was a way to make them load from the top it would be expensive to design. If they were to make it I'd be fine with one that loaded from the bottom. It could be the same design as an M14, the outside would just be a different.
The Marushin Garand looks good but just because it costs $500 doesn't mean its a great rifle. It actually stinks. High maintenance, lack of replacement parts, and usually breaks down. Many people buy it and are left with a broken replica.
Even so rifles like the Dboys Kar98 and Marushin M1 Garand still sold despite their being highly flawed. Imagine if you could get a good working upgradable gun out there in the $100-$300 range, I think it would sell.
Guns like the AGM MP40 and CYMA Thompson seem to get good sales I know a ton of people who own them, they seem to be a really commonly owned gun.

no accually it is possible. ive seen stripper clips in bolt action rifles and guns which were loaded in to the top. the only thing that would differ from the gas is when the clip ejects out so it would need to be spring loaded. ive even seen people who created an m14 to and m1 garand loading in to the top with homade clips made from real enblocs. if they made it feed through the top it would only be like 150.

also the mp40 and thompson are cheap guns and no conversion needed lol. i havent seen too many people with a bar which would be cool.

Its much harder then that. I've looked into it and can't really figure a way where it would work very well. Designing a new rifle costs a lot. Cloning an M14 with a new outer body would be much easier, a better way to go. The only bolt action airsoft weapons that take stripper clips are shell ejecting ones which stink.

mattroxsu,
I have been reading your post and I love your passion but am really tired of the fact that you are sooooooo clueless. You obviously have no idea what the internals of an AEG look like or how electric guns work. Based on your comments and questions you are either very young, very numb or a combination of both.
I recommend you step into the G-2 tent and take several deep breaths. There seems to be a run of new board members each summer who clearly just got off the short bus. Makes me crazy.

no accually i am right. i have taken apart a few gearboxes in my day. i have made several custom airsoft weapons. it is possible to load an aeg from the top just with a new gearbox. the loading assembly barrel would be turned upside down and the enbloc would have the bbs fall into the tube. its simple ive seen it done.

Doesn't seem like you need help you already know how to do it better than someone that has built hundreds of Garands. We await your designs on paper and in picture form of a proof of concept. Seriously I am interested to see what you come up with.

Well then maybe you could provide the forum a link to where you saw the top feed system done so we could learn from it since it works so well in your expert opinion .

I could see it working. You'd have the hop up facing upwards instead of its regular position. The gearbox would need to be shorter and it would need some kind of awkward, low capacity magazine. I am sure you guys have all thought of something like this but taking the time to do it is another thing. It would need a newly designed gearbox and magazines. Its not impossible, most things aren't. Its a matter of a lot of time and ton of cash. I'd say its pretty much out of the hands of us WWII Airsofters on here. If a airsoft manufacturing company would do it that would be great. It would be much more expensive and complicated then just using an M14 obviously. Their hesitant to make a Garand at all, top loading wouldn't be an encouragement to them I don't think. I'd be happy with a bottom loading one.

A realistic top loading Garand AEG would be impossible to make. Simply because there wouldn't be any space for even a custom gearbox and motor. Even if a tiny gearbox can be made to fit between the ejection port and the grip, it wouldn't be able to fire at any skirmishable distances. Even if you use a custom cylinder, custom piston, custom gears and a custom motor, you wouldn't be able to do it realistically. And if you can't do it realistically, what would be the point? A top loading GAS Garand, however, can and has been been made. It would be easier to design a 6mm version of the marushin.
