i'm in the process of restoring a visor cap i found at a flea market, one problem i've run into is the officers chin chord, i can't find it anywhere, i've checked hessen at the front and 1944, any where else?

If you can't find one, as a last resort, maybe an East German type? I believe there are slight differences...

it is an east german cap i got a new bill for it and new insignia, i need to find the chinchord, i found leather, chin straps but i'm looking for a silver bullion chin chord, i don't have money to shell out for a repro one from hessen, working on my 3rd SS untersturmfuhrer imp (shelters head from gadge and fusilier), i picked that one because i had a great uncle who was one in 1942

I was suggesting it as a cheap alternative. Plus, for the price of an original you can get an 1980s E. German officers hat for about $20. Thats what I did (for an repro that did not come with one) and I found out the E. German hat was worth $50 so I put it back.
oberst42, from what I understand, you bought an E. German hat for the parts tto restore it?

Ah, I see. Out of curiosity, what does the inside say?
There are a few on ebay for about $10 or less without shipping. Just type in "German cord" in the search in the militaria section if you want to go on ebay.

Oh no problem, ebay has almost everything.
And, I am not sure if anybody told you this before, with E. German hats they are not exactly correct WWII type. Some obvious are, the crown is shorter, there isn't a bottom piping on the band, the band isn't green (if you are going for Heer) and it the hat is grey (real ones have the field grey color I believe). The W. German has the correct (or closer to) shape, but incorrect colors.

i'm not putting together my totenkopf impression anymore, but i'm still finishing this as a display piece, the lower crown thing is good news, i just thought my head was too big!

Yeah, the East Germans should have kept the tall crown. And they should have kept the high collar for the officer's tunic too.

Yeah there might have been reasons for getting rid of all that blatantly 'german' stuff
