I haven't had a chance to see any of the series, How is it anyway? Is it just like Band of Brothers or does it totally have a new feel? Also, I want some background on whats going on in the series, like what year(s) is it set, What unit(So I can now what all the little kids are trying to emulate), and what are some of the invasions/major battles and engagements there depicting?

I enjoyed it. It was sort of like BOB, although focused less on training, and was more gory (hey, it's the pacific) It starts right after Pearl Harbor, and follows the enlistment/Deployment of the main characters. It focuses on Guadalcanal, Cape Glou? ?(don't know the spelling), Peleliu, Iwo Jima (after Basilone was assigned to the 5th Marine division) and Okinawa. It is about a few different regiments of the first Marine Division (1st, 5th, and 7th marine regiments, along with a regiment of the 5th Marine Division on Iwo) Featured a lot of Jersey boys, made me proud.

Just rented parts 1 and 2 tonight. Seems pretty well done. One question. Is the color on my TV off or were the vehicles on Guadalcanal painted an odd shade of green. More of a green green than OD?

This is an amazing series. I wish there could be one like it every year. Haha it was so funny when one of the privates went to go take a dump in a cave, but it was filled with Japs, so he came out of the cave with his pants down screaming, "shoot 'em, shoot 'em, why aren't you shooting 'em !!" Haha.

I thought it was an awesome series! Great acting too. But id have to say I like BOB better cuz there was more character depth. The Pacific was kinda like Marines charging through huge explosions and lots of gunfire and guys blowing up. BOB battles were cooler cuz they were up and close and on a smaller scale where guys taking out MG nests from close range and guys running around spraying with thompsons i like that. I did like the Guadalcanal Basilone episode and the Pelileu Landing and bunker scene. Overall though, both series kicked major ass! Id like too see a series on a company in Korea, Nam, or ww1. I think spielberg is making a movie on Abe Lincoln. The movie i cant wait to see is the Red Dawn Remake it should be pretty tight.

Im gunna have to agree with mastermike on this one cause I loved the series but I didnt really feel that character development that was shown in BoB. I also felt the battles were rushed because it made certain island conflicts seem like they lasted just a few days. I definitely loved the show but after every episode I felt like shooting myself because of how depressing it is.

They illustrated the war in the exact manner they should have. War is depressing, loved ones die, friendships can be lost, and terrible memories will follow you throughout your life. It's not happy happy joy joy let's go kill some Japs. They dug deeper and made it as a realistic, depressing Pacific conquest should be.

O I am fully aware of this Im just saying you definitely wont come out of watching this with that same good hearted America kills everything with a pulse feeling you get from BoB

I grew up in the heyday of the self-congratulatory WWII documentaries. There was the monumental "Victory at Sea", with an incredible musical score by Richard Rodgers. There was "Crusade in the Pacific." To keep up with the Navy, Eisenhower hosted "Crusade in Europe." In the '60's there was "The Valiant Years", based on Churchill's history ofthe war, and Montgomery hosted his own show telling us how he won the war. Then there were all those classic WWII movies, where people get shot, but there's never any blood, except maybe a little spot where the bullet hit. Nobody gets dismembered. Death screams last maybe 2-3 seconds. And I remember the hullabaloo when Sam Peckinpah put in very graphic and violent gunfight scenes in "The Wild Bunch."
"BoB," "Saving Private Ryan" and "The Pacific," for all their flaws, give a needed balance to Hollywood's depiction of war.

It was good , some things where changed from how they really happened but overall it was good. What things were changed? It seemed more true to reality then Bob which aperantly changed quite a bit. I got the series a few days ago on bluray, and I think I enjoyed it even more then BoB, Sledge is a fantastic character(real person) Very much like me, if I had been able to take combat like that, a stronger version of my self mabye, I also found lots of other charaters I liked, the battles scenes were even more in your face realistic, even surpasing SPR omaha beach scene in gore and violence. I also liked that it was a fight to the finish, in Bob you kinda wined down the last 3 episodes, but here you had a fight right until the end. it was also less setimental, the only death you really get a chance to absorb was Ack Ack's death, all the others were BANG and it was over, much like reality. I did think the sex scenes were unnessesary, I don't watch war films or series to look at boobs, I do that on my spare time.

I'm waiting for the day people STOP comparing The Pacific to BoB. Like they expected to see the same stuff, etc. Hell,in BoB they left stuff out,and added unnecessary stuff as well. They only things they have in common,is that they were both on HBO,and they take place during WW2. End of story.

Not really, they could have at least had better Character depth. Originally, The Pacific was suppose to be a 13 part series cuz there was suppose to be the story of a Pilot who was at Midway, but a Midway Scene would be soooooo expensive

Want to bet the Navy and the Air Force (formerly known as the US Army Air Corp) are wangling to get someone to do mini-series about them, now that we've had the Army and Marines? ;D
There's no lack of material out there.

There is also the influence of Tom Hanks And Spillberg, and I see the vietnam fingerprints of Dale Dye in the series to, just as he affected SPR and BOB. But yes, the series are diffrent, Bob was based on intervjues and the band of brother book, while Pacific was based on intervjues and atleast 4 diffrent books, mabye more, and that is good I think, in BOB you had Ambrose all over the seiries, his mistakes transferd into the series, while Pacific spread it outs.
