In the Highlands it got quite cold although a good portion of that sensations was probably because we were so climatized to hot temperatures. In the mountains when used to 90 degree heat 50 degrees was like freezing cold especially after a long, wet night. A night shirt, woobie (poncho liner) and m65 field jacket was a welcome partner. I had a woodland camo hoodie I bought at KMart and brought overseas which a favorite item. Berated as Flaggrantly Wrong by the Nam reenactor community I just giggle and drive on.
Masher Whie wing in Louisianna should simulate the conditions realistically without the misery of hot and muggy. Rain in Conneticutt should not be any big deal, just wear warm undergarments. "If it ain't raining you ain't training!" Snow however would kind of blow the atmosphere a bit!

Quick off topic question, is it practical to carry an M14 magazine in an M2 or M3 cotton bandoleer? Not the stripper but the actual mag. I know they use to carry 2 m16 20 rounds mags per pouch on the M2 bandoleer, so I'm wondering if it could at least partially accommodate one M14 mag.
If not than did the US ever issue a bandoleer designed for the M14 other than the stripper magazine?

You can have 4 M56 Universal pouches on your belt plus 2 more attached to your buttpack , that would give you 12 mags .

Four M56 pouches on your web gear set up was quite common. Magazined M14 rounds were quite heavy and it didn't take very many rounds to get quite loaded down with ammo. Ammo was something you never had enough of but deciding what was mangeable and how to lug it around was always a challenge. Spare ammo for the M14 came in 20 round cardboard boxes and these came in bandoleers. Each box had two stripper clips of 10 rounds and these could be somewhat easily loaded in M14 magazines although we typically loaded 18 round so the springs functioned as the should in the tropics.

I've carried a combat load of 5.56,and it can be heavy, but I can't imagine an equivalent amount of 7.62. Hell, carrying extra ammo for the '60 was enough!

I carried full combat loads in both calibers during my time in , the 7.62x51mm and the 5.56x45mm , but during a jungle firefight i much rather have the 7.62x51 , we could shoot through anything compared to the Colombians using their 5.56x45mm Galil's . The ammo might be lighter , but when you have to take out someone behind hard cover you want the bigger round.

Probably why in an arid climate and close quarters becoming the atmosphere of recent conflict why most US and NATO weapons are outfitted with the 5.56x45mm. On an insurgent with no body armor except the pillars of Islam id rather put have a 55.6x45 or a 5.45x39mm to put a man down and not tear through him, into the 300 year old plaster wall and check the 3-year-old on the other side. Not that that is the most realistic circumstance but a round that drives through you like a redneck after the Indy 500 sounds good to me. However, in thick jungle against regulars I can defiantly see the importance of a heavy round.
