I carried full combat loads in both calibers during my time in , the 7.62x51mm and the 5.56x45mm , but during a jungle firefight i much rather have the 7.62x51 , we could shoot through anything compared to the Colombians using their 5.56x45mm Galil's . The ammo might be lighter , but when you have to take out someone behind hard cover you want the bigger round. >> You're absolutely right about that. Give me an AK any day in a jungle..

Here's a little reference guide and gear breakdown for anyone trying to set up an Early Vietnam War USMC Rifleman impression. 782 gear assembled Gear breakdown M1961 Cartridge Belt The cotton M1961 belt was an upgraded M1936 pistol belt with a snap fastener between each of the middle row eyelets designed to attach M1961 model M14 magazine pockets. M1941 USMC Suspenders The design goes back to WWII and it was basically issued unchanged until it was replaced in the late '60s by the M1967 system. M1945 SHOULDER EQUIPMENT PADS These where original designed for use with the Army M36 suspenders , but at the end of WWII they where not needed because of the Army switching over to the M1945 suspenders with biult in pads. The USMC started issuing them to be used with the M1941 Suspenders to make the wear of the suspenders more comfortable. Three Cell Grenade Pouch Originally designed to carry 2 fragmentation grenades in each pouch , it was found that accidental detonation could be a problem so only one grenade was carried in each pouch instead. Jungle First Aid Kit and M1942 First Aid Early during the Vietnam War left over stocks from WWII were used by Marines , but these were then replaced by the 2nd Pattern kits specifically made for the USMC. Sometimes Marines would add a WWII M1942 First Aid Kit to the bottom of the JFAK as a means to carry more bandages. M1910 Canteen / Canteen Cover and Cup The Marines used these for most of the Vietnam War , around 1967 more Marines start using the Army M56 Canteen and Cover however. M1961 Ammunition Pouch The M1961 Ammunition Pouch was used from the begining of the Vietnam War until around 1968. Even tough it was designed to hold a single M14 Magazine , it was found that they could also be used to carry a magazine for the M16 rifle. M6 and M7 bayonet The M6 Bayonet was the standard issue bayonet for the M14 rifle. It was introduced in 1957 along with the M14 rifle. The M7 Bayonet was the standard issue bayonet for the M16 rifle. It was introduced in 1964 with the M16 rifle.

What are the recommendations for the M16A1, as far as historical accuracy/realism goes? I've heard good things about the G&P, CA, and TM. Thoughts?
Also, who are some reliable online airsoft vendors to purchase from? I haven't gotten an airsoft gun in quite a while...

Quick question.
Did they just sling shotguns or did they have a scabbard?

As far as i know shotguns where either slung over the shoulder or in the troopers hands like the other weapons , no Scabbards .

Here's one from Liberty Canyon last weekend. I still need to swap out the ALICE ammo pouches for some M56, but that's happening soon. Here's one from a friend and I at one of our local fields running as LRRPs.

RECONDO School is the 19th to 21st of August in Washington. I will be one of the instructors as will Cal Rollins who was an instructor at the actual in country school in Nha Trang. He was a SOG operator for numerous tours and went over the fence a lot. Ranger Josh Warren will be the training officer and will teach numerous classes as well. The instruction will all be applied in the field with several simulated recon and combat patrols against a dedicated OPFOR in Villagers, Moung tribesmen and both VC and NVA impressions. We will have authentic tentage and vehicle support. It will be our eighth installment of this excellent event.
The impressions started out pretty sloppy but now have reached a high state of authenticity. Obviously this is facilitated by the fact that LRRPS and SOG operators had a lot of latitude about what they wore but it makes for a wonderful variety of looks.

RECONDO is this coming week with folks literally coming from all over the world. I can't wait. We'll get some pictures posted once it's complete and we're all rested. Our principle instructor is Cal Rollins who was an actual instructor at the Vietnam Nha Trang course and when with SOG made numerous inserts "over the fence"
Subjects are Patrolling, Small Unit Leadership, RTO Procedures, Land Nav. First Aid, Demolitions. Art of the Ambush, NVA and VC uniforms and equipment, Call for Fire and immediate action drills. Graduates will demonstrate their ability to effectively lead a simulated airsoft patrol. Leadership positions will be rotated. Patrols as was the case back in the day will be four to six men and their will be a dedicated OPFOR to facilitate the learning objectives.

1969 LRRP kit, M16A1/M302 Grenade Launcher and an M72 LAWs. My grandfather was a LRRP in 69' so i was able to get first hand information on what they carried with them, everything i carrier with me is based off of what he told me he had carried with him on most standard Ops in Vietnam and Cambodia.
