The World War II Western Front Airsoft association Presents The Forgotten war Colmar Pocket February '45 March 5, 2011 Ground Zero Airsoft Store:1254 Wolcott road Wolcott, CT 06716 Field:235 Wolcott st terryville CT Historical Background The winter of 1944-45 settled on the Vosges as the coldest in recent memories. Eisenhower's order to the Seventh Army in December 1944 was to straighten its lines around Strasbourg and eliminate the 35 by 40 mile German bridgehead centered around Colmar which was a result of the French Army's failure to push the Germans back to the Rhine River in their sector. New Year's Day 1945 brought fresh snow and chilling temperatures in Alsace. In Hachimette where the Seventh Regiment had its command post, soldiers train in "spook suits" as armor is painted white, all available white cloth is used for camouflage and snowshoes and skis are issued. On Jan. 11, the Third Division command post officially moves to Ste Marie aux Mines from Strasbourg. So overshadowed by the news of the Battle of the Bulge, the equally-heroic Allied action around Colmar and Strasbourg became known as the "forgotten war" Please send your registration info via private message on these boards

Apart from Normandy the areas of France most bitterly defended by the Germans were Alsace and Lorraine. This occurred in part because the Allied surge across France in 1944 was slowed down by logistical difficulties as the Allies reached the easternmost extent of France, but the primary reason for the stout German defenses of these regions is that Alsace (German: Elsaß) and Lorraine (German: Lothringen) were claimed as part of Germany and would be defended as strongly as any other German soil. This perception informed Hitler's decisions of 24 November and 27 November 1944, that committed General Siegfried's Nineteenth Army to a do-or-die defense of the region around Colmar. On 26 November the Germans formed Army Group Upper Rhine, (Heeresgruppe Oberrhein) under the command of Heinrich and tasked his command with the defense of the front between the Bienwald and the Swiss border. Of prime importance to the German defense around Colmar was the bridges over the Rhine at Breisach and Chalampé , since it was over these bridges that supplies were delivered. Late February 1944, U.S. and French forces stand ready for the liberation of the French city of Colmar. German forces have prepared a defense in depth in order to stem the allied advance into the city. German units have prepared positions in the city as well as on a nearby highpoint known by the locals as Kafir Hill. If allied forces plan to collapse the Colmar pocket they must seize these two key positions in order to split the pocket in two. This would allow French forces from the North, and other American Units to the South to finally crush the Colmar pocket and bring the Allied forces one step closer to victory over Germany.
This event is going to be military simulation oriented, centering around the village as well as Kafir Hill. This event is going to test your endurance as there will be no scheduled breaks during the day. Soldiers must bring enough ammo and supplies to their primary position to last them the day. There will be two scenarios throughout the day in which fighting will be taking place at either the village or kafir hill. There will be a combat lunch midday in which both teams will be issued C-rations in the field. During this time both teams can send out patrols to probe defenses and obtain objectives. Throughout the day Commanders will be given certain side objectives that they can choose accomplish for additional points.
Medic Rule Every player will be given 2 bandages at the start of the game. They are to keep these bandages with them for the duration of the day. When a player is hit, they are to fall down (acting is encouraged!) and call for a medic. Any teammate can medic their fallen comrade by wrapping one of the bandages of the wounded man around their arm and holding onto them for five minutes. Contact must be kept for the entire five minutes and once time has elapsed the player is back in the fight. After a player has used both of their bandages and is hit a 3rd time, the player must lay dead in place for 5 minutes before falling back to an aid station or to their main base. Once at the aid station the player must wait five more minutes before returning to combat. Once they have waited their five minutes at the aid station they may remove their two bandages and may use them again in the field.
Aid Stations Each team will be given one medical flag to serve as a mobile respawn point. These aid stations can be captured by the opposing team for points. Aid stations can be captured by the opposing team for 100 points. The team must take the flag to their base to be awarded the points for the capture. After one hour the flag will be returned to its original owner and may again be used in combat as a mobile respawn point.
Ammo Restrictions At the beginning of the Operation, both teams must bring all of their ammo and supplies out with them for the day. They are to leave these supplies at their primary positions for the duration of the battle. Soldiers can only go into battle with their loaded magazines or clips and cannot bring speed loaders or ammo bags with them. Team leaders must work with their Squad leaders in order to coordinate rearming and refitting during their assaults/defenses. Support weapons (1919s, mg34s,42s) may be reloaded with the use of ammo cans or with bandoleers of deactivated ammunition/blanks. Each belt or ammo can equals one bag of bbs which can be carried on the attack and these items must be supplied by the soldier.

We can use the museum the night before, lots of room for cots and sleeping bags and it is only 45 minutes from the field of play.
I'll probably go German for this one, depending on the numbers. -Gordak

Can you imagine that I am still waiting for the time off approval since the day I planned this event? One of the stresses I had to deal with when planning events! I really like what I am seeing here in this thread! Anyhow, if the time off request is approved Mike and I will be there as the German MG42 crew.
Brandon, I don't think that photo is from the Colmar pocket! ;D

Brandon, I don't think that photo is from the Colmar pocket! ;D Nope sure isnt haha. When I remade the thread I lost the picture I couldnt find it again so I just used that one. As for medics, there wont be any designated medics but if you friend would like to be a medic that is fine. He can simply take some of the burden off the fighting troops and work to heal other teammates. For the ammo restriction, if all you have is a 10 round mag a speed loader is fine.

With less than two weeks before the scheduled start of the allied assault on Colmar, German high command has deployed additional forces to the area in anticipation for the attack. Due to this increase in Axis troops, the Allies have lost their numerical superiority in the region which means they will have to rely on tactics and American might to rule the battlefield and bring another crushing blow to the once mighty Werhmact.
