Okay, i've had this question for a long time. it's a really stupid question, it really is. But for an M1 garand do you use the full size M14 or a Socom? thanks.

Use the full size. You need the barrel length. You could, I suppose, use the SOCOM, but then you'd have to figure out what to do about the barrel.

The SOCOM is a 21st Century incarnation of the M-14. So, no,wouldn't be good.

You can replace the barrel on a socom easy enough to work with a garand conversion but it is much easier to start with a full m14 in the first place.

Has anyone ever tried it with a Socom version?
Also, what would need to be done in order for it to work?

I did up a "Tanker" version using a SOCOM base rifle for a customer who wanted a carbine version his young son could manage. It came out quite nice although I for one think the "Tanker" version M1 was ugly and of course know full well that it was never fielded by the US military. Rigging a barrel extension wouldn't be that hard and a lot of folks do so even with the full length version M14 as it is still a bit too shot to be completely 1:1 in length when replicating a Garand. The overall length ends up correct however as the rear stock on an M14 was somewhat longer than that on an M1 Garand. The garand stock being somewhat shorter in the butt stock area. The M14 stock was longer to facilitate the fact that Americans tended to be taller in the 60s than soldiers in the 40s.

Since I am on the road travelling I don't have access to do the measurements but I'm sure others could help. Please specifiy for them however what surface of the handguard and which handguard you are asking about. The way the military refers to handguards and heat shields is to decribe the weapon as though it were standing on it's buttstock upright. Hence the "Upper" handguard is the large, fatter one while the lower handguard is the long skinny one.
