Greetings WW2AA!
currently, I do not have a proper magazine pouch for my thompson magazines. I've been getting by using my mackinaw's pockets, but ill need to find a more permanent solution as the weather's been heating up.
my first choice is grabbing an m1a2 ('least i THINK thats the name..) gas mask bag and using that, i know a local who's selling his. Alternatively, I can buy a spare magazine bag or GP bag from ATF and just stash them there. Ive also looked at roughly 10 good photos of soldiers with m3's or thompsons, they either use their m43 pockets, or have a gas mask bag or some other pouch to stash mags in.
any advice on what to get would be appreciated!

A gas mask bag would work. Like you said a GP Bag or 5 cell pouch are also good alternatives. The GP bag is easier to get magazines in and out of and has more room.

Thanks for the input, so you'd reccomend getting the GP bag in that case?

I like the look of the 5 cell pouch the best but as far as functionality goes the GP bag is the best. The Gas mask bag was more used to store personal items. I'd pick up the Gas Mask bag if its a good price though. I think this is the one you are referring too? www.olive-drab.com/images/gasmask_bag_m6_400.jpg

I havent used a gp bag but the thompson spare mag bag works great. holds 5 of the 30 round length mags perfectally.
you can also use the 5 cell mag pouch for both 20 and 30 rnd length mags but the 20rnd length mags fit alot better

Sgt_Tom I guess ill go with the GP then, im more looking for functionality. The gas mask bag i was considering buying looked different from the one you linked, it was more compact and more round. freelancer I did consider the 5 cell, but i didnt feel like buying the TM short hi-caps, too much of an investment IMO thanks for the input both of you, ill just go with the GP bag or the spare mag bag, whatever comes to hand i guess.

I use a GP bag with my extra mags and love it. Its very easy to drop used mags and very easy to grab new ones. Only problem can be figuring out which ones are loaded and which ones are spent especially when dealing with midcaps but Im getting better at organizing my mags as I drop them.

Rapture, Put the loaded ones in sunny side up, and put the empties in sunny side down. Makes it easy!

Rapture, Put the loaded ones in sunny side up, and put the empties in sunny side down. Makes it easy! Thats what I try to do but when Im quickly trying to throw in a new mag I tend to just toss the old one in there so I can start throwing plastic down range again and tend not to look which end im throwing it in the bag.

freelancer, can you show me where I can get a 5 cell, 30rd pouch for the magazines? I have been looking everywhere for one. And I recently got ripped off when I bought one, it turns out that it was a 20 round mag pouch. I personally do not like the 20 rd mag on the thompson.

As far as I remember there are no 5 cell 30rd pouches. I've just seen pictures of 30rd magazines in the 20rd 5 cell pouch with the strap wraped around one side of the magazine. I would sugjest getting a 3 cell 30rd pouch.

I don't know that looks suspicious, I've never seen a 5 cell ammo pouch for 30 round magazines. I'm like 95% sure they don't exist.

well, i found one. And that bag is for 20rd mags, I think a gp bag is best for the 30 rd mags

it says its for 20 round mags, but read the reviews because one customer says it fits perfect for 30 round mags.

Complete fantasy. Did not exist in the war time. Handy, I'll grant that but not authentic.

Im guessing that that is something from the Korean War as I saw a soldier on M*A*S*H wearing something like that in a late episode(season 10 I think).

The only 30 round mag pouches were the 3-cell version that was used by the Marines. Everyone else was issued 5-cell 20 round pouches and/or the mag bag. My 30 rounders stay nice and snug in my 5-cell pouch but I usually just put my 20 rounders there and my 30s in the mag bag.
