Sad Day December 31, 1921 - February 25, 2012
Today I found out that Lt. Lynn D. "Buck" Compton passed away on Saturday, February 25th at the age of 90 years old in Burlington, Washington. Buck as you know was a member of Easy Company, 506th, 2nd Battalion, 101st Airborne. Buck was depicted in the famous mini series Band of Brothers as one of the leading characters and certainly one of my favorite. The timing of his death causes a sad irony as our event "Bastogne" is only 10 days away. Episodes 6 and 7 in Band of Brothers were focused on "Bastogne' and the everlasting effects those long grueling days and nights in the winter of 1944-45 had on many of the men in Easy Company. As we all know, Buck was one of them. Even though he was not wounded, Buck could not bare seeing so many of his close friends wounded or killed. Buck was "officially" taken off the line for a case of "trench foot", but those close to him knew why and never thought anything less of him. Several years ago I met Buck at the Mid-Atlantic Airport and Museum in Reading, PA for their annual WW2 weekend event. Buck was a modest and kind hearted man who never thought of himself as a hero, but just someone doing his job. He left an everlasting great impression on me that truly confirms in my mind he was a big part of "The Greatest Generation" I dedicate this event to his memory, his service and his life. God Bless you Buck.

!Achtung
Deutsche Soldaten! As we are 8 days away from operation Bastogne, I want to send out a preliminary communication to all German reenactors! I expect all German soldiers to be registered no later than 8:30AM on Saturday morning. We have a large German camp to set up and we will need all available manpower to get this up prior to battle. This camp will be set up at the Town of Foy on the High Point hill area. There is no access to vehicles at this location and we will have large amounts of gear to trek up there by foot. Welcome to the army ;D The German camp will be 100% authentic. NO modern tentage will be allowed. If you have a modern tent you can set it up in the parking lot. We have lots of reenactors that have spent beaucoup bucks on authentic period tents and they would all like to keep the real look and feel of the time period at the camp site. At the last event we had a very nice period German campsite but we still had some people bring modern equipment. I am going to ask that all German soldiers adhere to the following standards: - No modern flashlights. Use period or period reproductions only. - No modern coolers, plastic bags or anything else that is not period correct. At the last event we had lots of personal coolers strewn all over the field and it did not look cool. - If you must bring modern items, please wrap it in NON-marked paper bags, burlap, period rucksacks, ammo cans or crates. We have quite a few reenactors that have done a nice job hiding some of their modern items in paper bags or burlap and no one knew for the better. - We will have plenty of oil lamps throughout the camp to keep the area illuminated. I understand that some may feel uncomfortable keeping oil lamps inside your tents. This is fine, just try and hide the modern lamp in something period or keep your tent doors closed so it is not visible from the outside. - German uniforms only! No modern camo, sneakers or anything else you feel looks cool that is not period correct. We will have a company inspection by our Oberleuntnant and myself. We will be looking at uniform standards and handing out authenticity grading standards on each participant. In addition to our two votes we will ask each German reenactor to also vote who they feel has the best impression. The company vote will carry 1/3 the weight of mine and the Oberleuntnant’s votes. The top two most perfect impressions will receive prestigious military awards for their efforts. Camping at night in winter can get cold. If the temperatures stays above 32 it should be bearable. However if it falls below 32 expect a bone shilling night. Things to bring to help you through the cold. - Wool uniform, some wool under layers, and wool socks. - Sleeping pad if you are sleeping on the ground (helps keep the cold away). Sleeping cots, sleeping bags AND wool blankets. - Ski hand warmers. These can do wonders thrown into your sleeping bag at night. - Gloves - Spare batteries. The cold will kill your airsoft battery in no time. Spares will help a lot. If you bring the ski hand warmers throw a few with your airsoft battery at night to keep the batteries warm. You will be amazed at how many batteries I have saved for the next day by keeping them warm over night. - Food, please bring your own food for both days. Dunkin Donuts at 456 Main Street in Leominster, MA has graciously offered to donate breakfast for both days. They did this at the last event and it was much appreciated by everyone. So all you will need to bring is lunch and dinner. I would like to ask each participant to bring some firewood. If you can stop by the grocery store and pick up one of those 4 packs of wood they sell it will help us keep a roaring fire for the night time socializing. We usually all sit around the fire at night and reminisce about the days events over some libations, food and wonderful period German music. Dinner is reserved for after all battles are over which can sometimes be late. So for you early bird eaters, remember, we are reenacting a wartime event, soldiers in the day ate when it was safe not when they felt like it. Your field commander will let you know when it is safe to eat and stand down from military operations. In short here is a summary of what to expect: Authentic German camphost.activeworlds.com/jp/tent6b.jpg [/img] Period German musichost.activeworlds.com/jp/marlenebb.jpg [/img] Nightime entertainmenthost.activeworlds.com/jp/camplant2b.jpg [/img] Lots of explosiveshost.activeworlds.com/jp/explosionb.jpg [/img] Epic battleshost.activeworlds.com/jp/epicb.jpg [/img] Making new friendshost.activeworlds.com/jp/friendsb.jpg [/img] Lots of Yanks to shoot at ;Dhost.activeworlds.com/jp/yanksb.jpg [/img] Looking forward to a fantastic event. Let the Germans change history and win this Battle of Bastogne! From Oberkommando der Wehrmachthost.activeworlds.com/jp/odwc.jpg [/img] Be well and be safe, Auf Wiedersehen

Some may take you up in that. As for field set up, I will be at the field with a small work party on Friday around mid-day. Feel free to stop by to help. Migs

Is there camping allowed Friday night ? I will be at the field for set up on Friday around noon until 5 or 6PM. If you want to camp out on Friday, that would be fine, but you probably would need to be there before I leave. PM me and let me know if that works for you and we can coordinate something. Migs

A trick to sleeping in the cold, which was done during the war, and is a reenactor stand-by: Straw. Get a bale of straw (super cheap). Put a zelt on the ground (if have one), and use about 1/4 - 1/3 of the straw bale to spread all over the zelt/ground where you are sleeping. Fold your blanket in half, and put it on top of the straw, and then put more straw over your blanket. When sleeping, get in between the folded blanket. The straw helps retain body heat, keeps you off the ground (e.g. ground from sucking heat out of you), and is a hell of a lot softer!

Warmer than a sleeping bag!

Less than one week to go before the grand operations!
For those of you familiar with the field and those not so familiar, below is the layout of the land including field landmark identification names in black and Badtogne operation names in red. Car access will take you as far as Bastogne. From that point on all equipment needs to be sent up by foot. The Germans have a lot of equipment that needs to be brought up to the German camp North of Foy. We will need all able bodies to help bring this up. The red doted arrows is the path we will take to bring all this equipment to the camp. Below is the list of items that will need to be sent. Please try and be on time as the faster we set up the sooner we get to shoot some Yankee butt and retake Bastogne ;D
- 30+ Mines - Mine signs - Crate of kerosene lanterns - Crate of kerosene - Large Tents - Field commander tent - Chairs and tables - Food cooler - Cots - Panzerfausts - MG-42 with Tripod - Weapon crates - Grenade crates - Ammo cans - Barbed wire - Flag poles - Firewood - PA system - Blankets - Canoes for swamp traverse - Dynamite crate
All German able bodies will be used to bring this equipment up. Those that help will get an extra food ration and preferential treatment during battle operations.

So we set up camp, probably get done around 0930 or so, get our gear and attack the Americans and take Bastogne.
My question is, what do we do after 1000? Suppose I will bring Mein Kampf to read.
