Alright i know this sounds crazy but i want to make a box magazine for my agm sten powered by nothing but gravity. Here is the run down, you have a box with a tube and some sort of inclined plain at the bottom the tube leads to the hop up system on the sten gun. The way it would work is not complicated you would pour bbs into the box witch would feed into the tube and as the sten fires the weight of the bbs in the box would feed more bbs into the tube. The only reason I think this would work is because the sten guns magazine catch is on the side of the gun not the bottom so the bbs wont have to go down then up (witch would never work). please tell me if this is just not possible and if it is is there any special connectors i would need to fit the feeding tube to the hop up. Thanks

Typically you'll need positive pressure on the bb's in the hop up chamber in order to ensure they feed when the nozzle retracts. Without the pressure, you likely experience dry firing and sporadic feeding. But . . . you never know until you try!

I agree with Hornet. BBs by their nature tend to bunch up and no matter how carefully you craft a feed funnel at some point they tend to bunch up and fail to drop. The remedy of course is to shake the weapon vigorously until some of them break free or have some sort of aggitation system built in to the box. (Kind of defeats the notion of simiplicity) and the shaking is not very authentic and frankly quite noisey.
The old TOP gas machine guns were sort of a gravity feed. A tube was pulled back with the charging handle that spun and open up a slot in a copper tube and with gravity BBs rolled into the tube. The charging handle pushed forward then fed those BBs that fell into the channel into a feed chamber. The theory was great and it sort of worked. I decided to eliminate the complexity and just feed via gravity. (Sadly it barely worked at all.) Very frustrating.

To give you an idea of the challenge, take whatever means by which you attempt to pour BBs from one container into say a tube . When those BBs are forced into a single flow what happens? They cease flowing and you have to shake the upper container until they begin to flow again, only to stop again almost immediately, Even with continuous shaking the container won't allow BBs to continue flowing. It is an effort in frustration...but if you insist that is your perogativer. Knock yourself out and let us know how it goes. One must wonder why you asked.

that's a very good question and i have and i have an answer. I build a lot of things and when i have an idea that i want to build i get very exited so my reply to you was a spur of the moment thing and upon further review of the problem i have scraped the idea. once again i thank you for your help (and for talking me down

Sometimes it seems my primary role is to be a skeptic for others. I hope in the process it spares at least some folks from wasted efforts so they can focus on truly productive cool stuff that I would love to see happen.

I am basically a selfish old grump. Why add selfish? Old grump is more than an apt description. I'd stick with that.
